Hey, New Yorkers, in case you needed to remember that NYC is full of mob wiseguys, check out this video from the NRA. It's airing in Virginia, to remind voters that gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell is fighting for their rights—rights that Mayor Bloomberg and his mobbed up, dese-dem-dose-talking constituents want to take away!
Politico explains, "McDonnell fought Bloomberg's effort to shut down Virginia gun dealers who sold guns to undercover investigators working for the City of New York who bought the guns in violation of existing regulations." And here's some of narration from the video: "When Mayor Bloomberg got down here, your guy, Bob McDonnell, kicked him out of Virginia, and it was very disrespectful. When you vote I strongly suggest you forget about your freedoms and your Mr. Second Amendment Bob McDonnell."
Bloomberg unveiled an ad against McDonnell earlier this year and aimed at closing a loophole in the state's gun law that allows gun sales without background at gun shows—it features the brother of a Virginia Tech shooting victim.

Gotta give it to them for the in-your-face attitude. McDonnell fought against "violation(s) of existing regulations?" He fought against the law? I guess that's why a mobster is a good spokesman... but is that the image the NRA wants? They side with the mafia in NYC?
Am I missing something?
ah, OK. I get it. They're not going for the whole 'rationality' thing.
once you cross the Mason-Dixon, it's a totally different country.
Apparently Bob McDonnell isn't going for the Italian American vote either.
Pass all the gun controls laws you want, the thugs and killers will remain armed. Why should law-abiding people in rural areas, where gun ownership is high and the crime rate is low have to give up a constitutional right because people in the big cities can't behave themselves?
It's a constitutional right to be able to buy a gun without a background check?
Inconveniently for Ides' claim, the gun murder rate in South-Atlantic states, (which includes VA) in 2005 (the latest year available) was 4.9 per 100,000 people. The gun murder rate for Mid-Atlantic states (NY, NJ, PA) was only 3.3 per 100,000 people.
your stats are lame. Ides is talking specifically about NYC - people in "big cities can't behave themselves". your gun death statistics are a lame counter argument. have you ever BEEN to upstate NY? Most of this state is rural. have you ever BEEN to Pennsylvania? It's ALL basically rural. YOU made this about north/south, not him. Now, if you can dig up rural gun deaths v. urban gun deaths, you have an argument. specifically virigina v. nyc. but i doubt you'll want to pull those numbers bc you won't get the result you want. I'd bet money there are more gun deaths in nyc than rural virginia (can't count DC, that's 'big city')
and that's not to mention the thousands of people who die every year, accidentally from handguns
Dorkasaurus rex, get your facts right. According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control there were 624 deaths from accidental gunshot wounds in 2006 from all firearms including handguns, which was less than two per day nationwide and down 156 from 2005.
Compare these numbers to accidental deaths by Burns 3,202, Drowning 3,539, Falls 20,823, Poisoning 27,536, and Traffic Accident 42,644.
Much credit is due to the National Rifle Association’s numerous firearms safety programs for lowering the numbers of accidental deaths despite the fact that both the nations population and firearms ownership are increasing.
can't watch the video here at work, but my understanding of it based on the article is this: Virginians should vote for McDonnell because he fought the guy who is trying to prevent Virginia gun dealers from illegally selling guns?* the hell?
*feel obligated to mention that I will not be voting for Bloomberg
hey at least it's an entertaining ad
Yes Virginia...send us a message by voting for a guy.
It is super cool to hate on NYC!
It's an important part of our economic recovery program here in Virginia -- selling guns to out-of-state wackos and cons who carry them home to New York and sell or use them in your neighborhoods. Bob McDonnell is the champion of these small businessmen. And I'm proud to chair Crackpots and Criminals for McDonnell.
How dare those toothless sister-fuckers stereotype us!
That was horrible and hilarious at the same time.
very good.
That's the trues
Wait, hold on. It's well-established that the Second Amendment doesn't prohibit reasonable restrictions on the purchase and sale of guns. Undercover investigators bought guns illegally, in violation of those restrictions. Gun dealers sold guns illegally. Bloomberg tried to shut down those gun dealers. And McDonnell fought against this?
So, basically, the premise of this ad is: "Bob McDonnell: fighting for your right to do business illegally"?
"...it features the brother of a Virginia Tech shooting victim."
This is exactly how you should attack wingnuts with their conjecture and hearsay—with the cold, hard, awful, inconvenient truths.
Thinktwice, you should think twice. Here are a few inconvenient truths for you. Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives reviewed Mayor Bloomberg’s so-called “Sting operations” tapes and found no evidence of wrongdoing by any of the Virginia firearms dealers, and no charges were filed.
Of course, that did not stop Mayor Bloomberg from wrongfully filing lawsuits against those firearms dealers that were following the law. In the months following these so call “Sting operations” it was revealed that some of the dealers had received high praise from the BATFE for their cooperation with federal investigations.
In addition, Mayor Bloomberg’s antics exposed several Federal criminal investigations, and undercover law enforcement agents were called in because their identities were exposed, and there lives were in peril. The BATFE warned Mayor Bloomberg to cease those publicity stunts because they were unlawful and jeopardized Federal investigations.
Bob McDonnell is not trying to protect illegal firearms trafficking. Rather, he is defending Virginia’s lawful firearms business and fighting to keep out of state big city mayors from litigating lawful Virginia business owners into bankruptcy.
i guess they're still sore about 'my cousin vinnie' getting those little dago wops out of jail.
the subtext of this ad is: vote mcdonnell HE'S WHITE, REAL WHITE
I don't get it? but they love Italians, they're mostly republicans. now if they do an Irish vs. Italians ad, that would be interesting. mcdonnell's irish, right?
and dees gun rights guys love the mafia, isn't that why boondock saints is their favorite movie?
I attended the McDonnell Douglas Debates. It was very Boeing.
Ok, I'll go back into my hole now.
Its a win for illegal gun trafficking and rural resident gun owners who have the right to bear arms against aliens that attack their fields....
