A Fox 5 cameraman happened to be shooting footage near the Ed Sullivan Theater yesterday for a segment on taxi medallions when an angry brawl exploded between a pedicab driver and a cabbie. It starts when the pedicab driver, fed up with the hack honking his horn behind him, tosses a cup of coffee at the cab's passenger-side window. You gonna take that cabbie? Not in New York! Check it out:
Fox 5 reporter Reid Lamberty and a photographer from Entertainment Tonight, who was covering the David Letterman sextortion story outside the theater, eventually pried the two apart. It doesn't look like any blood was spilled, but then the pedicab driver, who comes off as the loser in this bout, goes all WWE, picking up a metal garbage can and [SPOILER!] heaving it at the hack. He misses, and then escapes by pedaling off into the sunset, first against traffic and then on the sidewalk, naturally.
You do hate to see violence, but on the other hand, this is so quintessentially New York that we can't help but smile like Burt Lancaster in Sweet Smell of Success: "I love this dirty town."

Instead of throwing the trash can at the taxi driver, who could (and did) easily avoid it, the pedicab driver should have thrown in into the taxi's windshield.

if this mental midget did this to a pedestrian and got knifed to death he would be some tragedy filled sad sack cut down in his prime, leaving behind a wife and kid. but the video shows exactly what happened, he instigated it, honking is not instigating a fight, we need to remove those mental midgets off the streets who think getting honked is throw down time.
i hate it when people honk at me, but i drive slow and legal and make turns when its safe to do so. im not killing a pedestrian crossing the street or getting into a car accident just because some ass is honking at me.
Good for you. I've noticed that 90% of the time a driver gets honked at they move their car whether it's safe to do so or not. I like to ask them if they do everything some jerk-off tells them to.

If a cab had tried to cut me off, I would have let him, then crashed into him, writhed in pain on the ground and taken the cabbie to the cleaners. Aside from the ridiculous fares, the rude, dangerous and just generally awful taxi drivers are another big reason I refuse to take taxis in this city. They have a massive sense of entitlement. "This is my job you're talking about here. I'll do whatever I want on the street because my livelihood depends on it. Who gives a damn about traffic laws?"

While riding my bike in midtown once, I accidentally knocked into a cabbie's driver's side window. Didn't break it, just knocked into it. He got steamed of course, but I just apologized and went on my way.

They are usually young foreign assholes with no regard for pedestrians, cars, or other bikers for that matter and do what they want. They invade bike paths, sidewalks, and run through red lights like wildfire. They need to be regulated even more, or banned.

I've taken pedicabs a few times. In my limited experience, the drivers I've had have ALL been extremely careful. They've stopped at red lights, actually slowed down @ yellow lights and stayed in lane (and OFF the sidewalks). In other words, they've behaved perfectly, certainly far better than most cabbies.
That said, like anything else I'm sure there are asshole pedicab drivers out there. Maybe I've just been lucky.
Same experience, the pedicabs are very cautious since the police and parks depts are always cracking down on them yet overlook all the carriage drivers running the red lights

The cabbie gave up his natural advantage when he got out of the van but apparently he had sized up his opponent well and figured he would prevail. I don't know about that garbage can throwing though. And it's surprising there were no cops there, in front of Letterman's theater on a day when the media was stalking him.

What the hell kind of city is this where pedicabs are cursed for being a traffic annoyance while reckless cab drivers get tipped extra for careening down a side street at 50 mph to shave maybe half a minute off a ride. Meanwhile cabs are involved in something like 5-10 injury-causing crashes a day and one fatality a month or something like that???
I don't know the rules, but FWIW this guy was riding in a regular lane when a huge bike line exists on Broadway. I work right there and it's a solid sized bike line with a green-painted buffer .
