Mixed Reviews For Letterman Sextortion Apology

2009_10_letterman4.jpg

Last night, David Letterman apologized to his wife and Late Show staffers for spilling the beans on having sex with staffers. Last week, Letterman disclosed details about a $2 million extortion attempt—the suspect was threatening to reveal details about these affairs—probably because details would be sought after the Manhattan DA's office announced charges anyway. He said, "It did not occur to me last week when I was discussing having had sex with women who worked on this show, that then what would happen is reporters and newspaper people and radio and TV would start hounding the staff and saying, ‘What do you say, are you, and this and that.’"

Mediaite's Glynnis MacNicol is skeptical that Letterman didn't realize there would be a tabloid frenzy: "Really it did not occur to him that the tabloids would have a field day with this story and do their best to dig up all parties involved? Come on. Did David Letterman just move to New York City? Was this past weekend his first encounter with the morning newsstand tabloids?" And now a new poll says a third of Americans are less willing to watch the Late Show with Dave's admissions (though it's unclear how many are Leno fans) while two thirds say the scandal doesn't impact their watching.

Scandal equals ratings, at least according to Nielsen: "The Nielsen Co.'s overnight measurement of the nation's 56 biggest markets netted Letterman's Late Show on CBS a 4.2 rating — higher than anything rival NBC had in prime-time." The tabloid gold of the scandal also means that we learn Stephanie Birkitt, the one-time girlfriend of suspected extortionist Robert Halderman, cheated on Halderman with...Letterman. The Post reports, "Letterman and Birkitt enjoyed romantic hikes last fall at his sprawling ranch in eastern Montana -- where he was married in March -- while her boyfriend, '48 Hours Mystery' producer Robert 'Joe' Halderman, stayed home in Connecticut, the sources said... 'I'm his best friend,' Birkitt told the worried 51-year-old Halderman, the source said."

really, who the fuck cares? david letterman does his job well, he isnt a politician, WHO THE FUCK CARES

Why would it matter that he's not a politician? Nobody should be excused workplace rules on sexual harassment/misconduct because he does his job well.

I read somewhere that CBS is looking into whether there was sexual harassment/misconduct. At the very least, it may have created an uncomfortable work environment.

It's always interesting when the Emperor is revealed as having no clothes.

truer words were never spoken.
ain't dat da troof.
he went from a make believe grumpy bitter old man to a real grumpy bitter old man, and get off my lawn.

People do much worst things. The sex was consensual and he was not married at the time. At least Letterman didn't do what Spitzer did.

Do you think it's less bad to cheat on a girlfriend than a wife? In both cases it's presumed you are in a monogamous relationship. I would say the betrayal is just as hurtful whether there are vows involved or not.

It's definitely not right to cheat on someone, doesn't matter if your married or not. All I'm saying is what Letterman did is not something shocking. There are plenty of people who cheat on their partners with co-workers.

Really, are we going to rate his apology?

it's on a sliding splooge scale.

In reality, this isn't the public's business. It's a personal matter, brought public but it's not for any of us to judge. I think this country's gotten a little carried away with feeling entitled to judge the way someone's doing their job by what's going on in their personal life. We watch Lettermen b/c we are entertained by him, end of story. The rest is between the immediate people involved & their lawyers.

Do I have to spell it out? It's the HYPOCRISY. people.

Letterman's frequent targeting of other public figures for their real (Clinton, Spitzer) or imagined (Palin) sexual indiscretions are what make him fair game.

He can dish it out better than anyone. Let's see if he can take it.

He's a late night COMEDIAN. Of course he's going to make JOKES about the news of the day, especially if such news involves the sexual indiscretions of elected officials. That's his job.

Joking about someone's misbehavior and avidly trying to destroy someone's reputation are two very different things. In any case, judging from the ratings boom, Letterman doesn't have to worry too much about his reputation, despite the weird desire among some in the media to see him crash and burn. Leave the guy (and his staff) alone.

who in the media wants him to crash and burn besides the NY Post? it appears he has the public on his side.
I wonder why his male staff are quiet? especially the writers, I think the production part is mostly female. at least, it was when I dealt with the show when he was at NBC. Not the stage crew. I still have the name laurie diamond on a telephone list.
besides, he's got NYC in his pocket, he needn't worry a thing, whatever he needs the DA will provide.
next thing you're gonna tell me is Johnny carson, a Great Guy.

I think I answered my own question, the writers/creative side is separate from the production. writers mostly men, production mostly women. from what I remember.
what promotions can writers get? unlike production, senior segment producer, executive producer, segment producer, production coordinator, senior production coordinator, video producer, live producer, lettuce producer.

From funny, to lame, to psychodrama. The Ed Sullivan Theater won't be renamed anytime soon.

Cut him some slack. If you married Bill Paxton, like Dave did, you'd eventually look for real tail too.
