Sendak's Wild Things in SoHo

phpMB9jeQAM.jpg This past Thursday the Animazing Gallery unveiled the world’s largest exhibition and sale of original illustrations and etchings from the collection of artist and author Maurice Sendak. The show is comprised of 200 pieces and will run through November 8th and coincides with a Sendak retrospective at the Morgan Library & Museum.

Sendak may be best known for Where the Wild Things Are (just brought to life on film with the help of Spike Jonze), but he's authored and illustrated more than 100 books; he's currently working on his latest, titled Bumble-Ardy.

The gallery (located on Broome & Greene) will have etchings, limited editions and a commemorative poster for sale, with proceeds benefiting the Rosenbach Museum & Library and the Jane Goodall Institute. The exhibition is free and open to the public seven days a week; Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. More details can be found here.

I love the 6th image—it makes me happy.

The character study page is a nice treat. Do they have that for the other creatures?

Just as a point of interest. Most of these images seem actually to be design studies for the opera version of Where the Wild Things Are. In the first three images especially you can see the use of scrims and curtain hangings. The opera is not widely known, was produced in the mid to late 1980s and Sendak did all of the stage and costume design. I saw it performed, but was to young (14 or 15) to appreciate the rather modern and dissonant opera.
