A Mets' World Series ring will be given out in Queens after all this year and instead of costing hundreds of millions in salaries to banged up megastars, one of the old Shea faithful was able to bring it home for a mere $56,000. That's how much one Queens native paid to win an auction for Lenny Dykstra's 1986 World Series ring the outfielder won with the Mets, possibly even beating out Dykstra himself. It was one of 11 auctions of Nails memorabilia that fans got to dip their bids into, closing yesterday and bringing in over $162,000.
Dykstra sold the items to a pawnbroker after falling into serious financial trouble, filing for bankruptcy in July and saying he owed more than $31 million and had about $50,000 in assets. Word was that Nails himself planned to bid on some of his old memorabilia after not being able to repay loans to the pawnbroker. Other items included his Word Series trophy and the home run ball that Dykstra hit to win the third game of the 1986 NLCS against the Houston Astros, which sold for $31,070.
Met fans must be getting truly desperate for some World Series love after being let down time and again by their disappointing teams. Before the auction went up, sports memorabilia experts predicted that the ring would sell for around $20,000!.

They got ripped off. I bought one of Nails' half-eaten twizzlers at the auction for $7.76. Bought the frame at Target for $4.99.
Score!
I think the ring was a good buy. The odds of another Mets team winning a World Series are in the stratosphere. At one point the team will be sold and the new owners will rename it. Any suggestions?
I think they should relocate to Roosevelt Island. There's a center right there for the handicapped and for extra good luck Citi Field II could be built over the smallpox hospital ruins. New name? The New York Pox, of course. Or Red Pox.
As he owns NYC now, "The NY Bloombergs" BB team
In any event ,Dykstra was colorful and a real nice person
would return the ring to him ,after buying it,... nah.
If anyone need any more evidence that Jim Cramer is full of shit, here's his insight into Dykstra's financial acumen:
