Last Night's Action: The Puck Drops

  • Penguins 3, Rangers 2: The privilege of opening against the defending Stanley Cup champions did not inspire the Rangers, who fell behind 3-1 before making a comeback attempt that came up short. Chris Drury scored the first goal of the year to tie the game at 1, and Marian Gaborik added one in the third period. The Rangers were outshot, 31-27, and get Ottawa at home on Saturday.

  • Rays 13, Yankees 4: CC Sabathia will not win his 20th game. He was pounded for nine runs -- that ties a career high -- as the Yankees fell in a meaningless game. When the schedule came out, these games looked as if they would be important. But thanks to a disappointing season from the Rays, they're just a last chance for the Yankees to set their playoff roster. To show you what they thought of this game, the Yankees let Jose Molina serve as the designated hitter. The Bombers still don't know their first-round opponent, as Minnesota won and Detroit lost on Friday.

  • Mets 7, Astros 1:Speaking of meaningless, the Mets won a game! Jeff Francoeur and Daniel Murphy both homered at home -- a task The Times thinks is nearly impossible -- to help snap a three-game losings streak. File John Maine's strong start -- he lasted seven innings -- under good signs for next year.
