Yay! Upon hearing screams from a Bronx building, a stranger ran up a fire escape, kicked in the window of a burning apartment and rescued a 4-year-old boy. Horia Cretan said, "I heard somebody scream, I didn't know what was happening outside. I looked up and just couldn't see nothing, there was too much smoke. I just kicked in--I kicked in gear. I put the ladder down, I went upstairs, I did the best I could."
According to the Daily News, firefighters were at the apartment on Zerega Avenue already and one of the firefighters passed the boy to Cretan. He told NY1, "I inhaled some of [the smoke] and it was bad. I can't imagine how strong the kid is...I just held his head up. I put my hand underneath his neck so he could breath better. I felt his heart beat. It was faint but he was all right. And I made sure I protected him with the curtain because they were throwing glass from on top of the stairs."
This morning, Cretan appeared on Good Morning, America to recount the rescue—and he proposed to his girlfriend too! Cretan said, "There's never going to be a dull moment" (she accepted).

And he did it in a fabulous red turtleneck
He's ready for Fall and for fires
That's nice
You say subway, I say hero! Subway! Hero!
Oh wait...Fire escape! Hero! Fire escape! Hero!
I miss Dennis Duffy.
He had me at "...I cried...I cried like a big, dumb homo."

Yayyy! More stories like this, and less bikers vs. drivers, rent control vs. free market, and hipsters vs. non-hipsters troll bait please!
I love it when awesome people are happy. I wish them all the future success and joy in the world.
Go team venture!
Good stuff.
i dont see what the big deal is.
if anything thats a really dumb move.
this guy ran interference, he could have fell or dropped the kid carrying him held in front and forward facing down a flight of stairs encumbered by some curtain / bed sheet thing wearing sneakers and baggy pants.
also walked backwards on the narrow landing without holding on to anything. and why did he stop to give the camera the thumbs up, what happened to bringing him all the way down to an ambulance. if it was a matter of a trained firefighter carrying him down one flight id choose the fdny rather than some glory hound dubious hero who did not "save" anybody when the fdny & ladder truck was already at the scene.
i gotta agree with my fellow (10) potsmoker
this guy practically snapped the boy's neck
and/or fell over the curtain he was dangling
caught up in the moment. the real hero, once
again, is the FDNY. the "hero" here is lil
more than a "zero": a douche like Kanye
THANKS!
Gothamist writes it as
"a stranger ran up a fire escape, kicked in the window of a burning apartment"
The Dailynews writes it as SENK doing the rescuing.
The truck's ladder was raised up to the burning apartment's window and Firefighter James Senk scampered up it - and bashed his way inside.
Once inside the smoke-filled apartment, Senk found a 4-year-old boy a short distance from the window.
"He goes 10 feet deep into the the room, and pulls the kid out to the window," a Fire Department source said.
while its all good to praise Heros, aint nobody a hero in this situation except the FDNY.
I think all the news reports were calling Cretan a hero.
I also think there are a number of accounts—and Cretan says he also kicked the window in and was given the boy.

he says "I just kicked in--I kicked in gear"
not i kicked in the window.
the comments on your abc news link show that his story is dubious.
Although I was initially moved by Horia's bravery, I am thoroughly dismayed with his lack of integrity. It can be seen clearly on video that Firefighter James Senk entered the fire and pulled that little boy to safety. And shame on the media for running with the sensational aspect of the story and not checking the facts and giving credit where credit is due.
did anybody also listen to the crowd?
0:25 (he is handed the kid through the window)
0:52
you fucking asshole bring him down the fire escape.
1:06
(the guy starts to shield himself from falling glass)
1:18
why didnt he bring him down the fire escape
1:38
the guy gives the thumbs up and yells to the crowd 'hes ok'
1:50
why doesnt he bring him down
why dont he bring him down
2:20
(its hard to see what happens, but again the guy is again crossing the plank encumbered by holding the kid like a rag dog with the sheet, then dropping the kid foward down the ladder and the next shot is the fireman holding the kid folded up on the stairs with his legs through the rungs, and then they go back UP to the window)
why do i bother, humanity is doomed.
if anybody here actually climbed up or down a fire escape in a real emergency situation, held, moved or carryed an unconscious person, or understood that holding a kid 'underneath the neck so he can breathe better' is not the correct medical assistance for someone whos suffered smoke inhalation, stopping under a window where theres a fire is just as dumb as stopping above a window, debris falling vs smoke rising.
his stopping an giving the thumbs up instead of bring the kid to safety and medical atention is negligent and certainly doesnt make him a hero. his clumsy risk taking and technique is dangerous where they both could have fallen.
i dont want to portray the FDNY in a bad light in this situation but fireman at the window holding the kid should have said get the F off the fireescape or get out of my way a-hole, but was probably caught up in the moment no knowing if there was anybody else inside, not knowing that this jerk would stop for a photo opportunity on the landing below.
