Starbucks Instant Coffee Instantly Hated by New York

Starbucks has just introduced "Via Ready Brew," their $1 instant coffee packet, and according to CEO Howard Schultz, "It took a lot of courage to say that even though instant coffee is the worst cup of coffee you can have, we are going to reinvent it." Only time will tell whether Schultz's courage is actually madness, but the instant reaction hasn't been too favorable. Though the company insists Via "completely replicates" a fresh-brewed cup, many customers have been blanched. One tells the Daily News simply, "It's bad," while another observed, "You can get a cup of coffee for $1 on every corner of New York City that tastes better than this. Maybe it's a product for people in other cities. I don't see it selling here."

Starbucks Gossip has the barista reaction to the rollout; the very first comment is probably our favorite: "I heard that we are suppose to get it wet and in their mouth and in their hands. Starbucks VIA, are you ready to brew?" And of course Nescafe sees this as nothing more than rank style-biting, and has launched an ad campaign declaring, "Imitation is Flattery. Charging 400% more, not so much."

It technically would be fresh brewed. It's microground, not freeze-dried. Admittedly, that still doesn't make me too eager to try it.

    Del Signore strikes again.

Italicizing for emphasis is very clever!!! It's like instant comedy! Especially when followed up by " quotes in bold." We say "thumbs up" to this recipe for Comedy Gold!!!!!

  • PKinNYC

it's like dog shit filtered through a homeless guys sock. Starbucks is garbage...and now another way to make garbage at home or at your desk.

  • Trilby16

Is it as bad as Folgers? That's what I want to know. If you are going to drink instant coffee, you can do a lot better than $1 per cup! That's steep. Ooh, a pun!

  • valeriob

A coworker referred to the taste as "sanka-ish"

  • Shinobi Shaw

For a good coffee *worth* the overpricedness, try DEAN & DELUCA! Their Mochas are waaaay better then Starbucks!

  • Splicer

I had a barrista do the hard sell on me this morning and practically force feed me the stuff (and not even the cute red headed barrista...it was the fat one). It tasted strong because it was delivered in the small cup (the one below Tall) but didn't impress me. It wasn't shit but not nearly as good as the brewed.

  • TT

they had an offer for free via from their website a couple months ago.

for instant coffee it wasn't bad, better than their regular drip. it still wouldn't be daily coffee.

    street vendor coffee sucks.

  • valeriob

Wha whaaaa? Which street vendor coffee has bad coffee?

PS Starbucks store are giving these away for free in-store today.

  • Kojak

Starbucks elitists will love that its Instant Coffee that's actually Starbucks, but they'll balk at drinking instant coffee because its not freshly brewed (Because they're better than that)

This is quite a conundrum for our city's most snobbish Coffee drinkers.

ALL Starbucks coffee tastes like overpriced burnt crouch.

  • heypatrick

The only thing instant coffee is good for is baking.

  • barryap

I love me some instant coffee, but who would buy this? The hook to the freeze-dried stuff is that it's dirt cheap.

  • NannyState

They keep missing the real market. The future is in injectables.

  • Clarice City

I like to cut up my instant coffee with a credit card and snort it off my desk.

  • The Edge

    Don't forget the coffee-mate.

  • NannyState

Coffee-Mate sucks. If my dealer steps the fuck all over my shit with that, the knives come out of my drawer.

  • nicemarmot

I don't know why they would try to sell this product in NYC. Coffee culture here is that people go out for coffee rather than making their own. I don't think crappy Starbucks instant coffee is going to change that. I could see it doing well in more suburban spread-out types of places, though.

  • JacqueMehoff

why aren't they giving away free samples?

  • nycbrent

They are...I received two packets in the mail, and when I ordered an Americano earlier today they gave me a sample (on the UWS). It tasted fine to me, and although it may cost a little more, IMO it's better than any coffee cart joe I've had on the street. I don't see it replacing my one-cup coffeemaker at home or at work, though...

I'm still soooooo confused by Shultz's decision to launch this at the stores.

I've had Via for a few months now, and although it's OK (not bad, but nothing to make me skip standing in line), I'd expect the launch to be a t a grocery store, not the coffee shops.

I mean, if I dragged my butt out of bed to get to the Starbucks, why would I buy Via? He could have saved a lot of face for the company by having the launch events outside ShopRite.

  • EastRiver

if I dragged my butt out of bed to get to the Starbucks, why would I buy Via?

So you could make it tomorrow at home or in the office? You're over thinking this.

  • Eli

You're missing the point. This is desk-side coffee. You buy your packets and just add water. No need to run to a corner coffee cart or wait in line at some diner. The only hard part is figuring out how much water to add to get the exact taste, but this VIA is quite good.

  • whitecastlerock

Starbucks coffee is terrible and overpriced. The baristas try to be all cute and funny. They wear stupid headsets, they have 5 cashiers but one person to make specialty drinks. The garbage is normally overflowing. Filthy countertops. Starbucks coffee tears through your digestive system quicker than citric magnesium...

  • So, their plan is to sell processed, freeze dried, coffee dust of their already deplorable, overcooked, burnt coffee to customers for $1?

For another 50¢ you can get the real bean... Seems, as usual, and even though a dollar, overpriced!

  • valeriob

The coffee carts on every corner are fresher, more flavorful, hotter and much cheaper. Plus no wait, no snide 'baristas', no bullshit size names, no gasping for air mid-order for your latte.

Wins all around for coffee carts.

  • Wza

    Yep.

    That's what I do.

  • Clarice City

Word. I get my morning brew at the hardware store. No lines, nice people, straight-up coffee.
