The Post, which called war on Canada geese earlier this year after the bird strike that downed US Airways Flight 1549, adds to its list of bird vs. flying machine incidents, reporting that a bird dent the front of a Boeing MD-80 which was landing at Laguardia Airport yesterday.
According to the Post, Delta Flight 1933 from Boston was approaching the airport and suddenly a bird hit it. A worker who saw the plane at the gate said, "There was blood on the nose of the plane all the way up to the windshield... There was a big dent. I saw feathers attached to the plane." And he said the pilot was "amazed... [The pilot] said he heard it when he was coming in for a landing. He thought it was a goose." Other than the bird and the nose of the plane, there were no other apparent injuries.
There have been nine bird strikes with "substantial damage" at Laguardia between 2000 and 2008, while there have been 30 at JFK Airport—and a few months, the city embarked on a plan to kill 2,000 Canada geese in order to prevent any more bird strikes. However, there are birds everywhere—even Mayor Bloomberg's private plane was hit by one near Boston!

Its the price you pay for having a Nature Preserve right next to a major airport.
This happened at LaGuardia, not JFK. But I guess Rikers Island could be considered a sort of nature preserve.
that's exactly right - the birds are just a symptom of the real problem - which is the water. that's right, the water - planes crash in it, people keep falling into it and drowning, it is taking up a lot of space that we as humans need, not to mention it is covering up a lot of potential golf courses. the sooner we start putting that shit into big tanks and shooting it out into space, the better.
If we eliminated the oceans, where would my sushi come from? Tisk tisk...
Man, I wonder if this stuff ever happened before 1549.
Probably not!
Where is FelixtheCat when you need him to defend the geese? The city should capture the geese and deposit them in his apartment.
the geese have obviously been trained by al-qaeda.
Love the cover of the Post. Like there are 50 or so geese with evil intentions hanging around JFK waiting to score another 'kill' on a plane. Go ahead, shoot all the geese. More geese will fill the void. How about just cultivating some predators and allow them to cull the flocks naturally? Or how about having a family of dogs live out there. Hire someone to capture and cook the geese and feed them to the dogs. How many dogs sitting in shelters would be better off chasing geese for a living? And politically, who is going to complain? Can't bitch about cruelty to geese if they are saving the lives of dogs, right?
Nature before technology!!! Can't we keep the cute little birds safe from these air contaminating jet airlines?
Problem is humans are land mammals. We don't belong in the sky.
They have cannons that shoot 4 lb chickens at jet engines at almost 400 m/h!

The holidays are coming. Start an ad campaign to make goose a fashionable t.giving/xmas staple.
