Huge Arsenal in Staten Island Man's Home Was "Just for Hunting"

092909biggame.jpg President Obama's been in office just eight months, and already the government is moving in to disarm the citizenry. Why, just the other day they raided Anthony Cortese's house over in Midland Beach, Staten Island, confiscating his weapons and dragging him off in handcuffs, all because he hadn't registered some of his firearms with Obama's thought police! Cortese says he's a big game hunter (he owns property up in the Catskills) and tells the Staten Island Advance, "I think it's absolutely horrible that in America, they would take away a man's hunting rifles. I have to fight to get them back."

But how can it be a fair fight without any of his weapons? Police, acting on a tip, raided the house on Friday, seizing four rifles and five shotguns in the bedroom closet of Cortese's 11-year-old son; three shotguns, five rifles and .22-caliber ammunition in the first-floor closet; 650 rounds of .22-caliber ammo and 192 M-series fireworks in the pantry; a gravity knife; a handgun in the garage; and a rifle on the front porch. They even took his imitation pistols. Oh, and 41 armor-piercing, aluminum-tipped rounds that explode on impact. Those Catskills bucks would have never known what hit them! .

Cortese believes a neighborhood drug suspect told police about the handguns, some of which are family heirlooms, because "it's no secret that we hunt and that I am a gun owner." Yep, everyone knows that, even the drug dealers—we can see that defense going over really well in court. Cortese is charged with one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, 42 counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of possession of an imitation pistol, and one count each endangering the welfare of a child, etc., etc. Even big game Cortese admits, "It's just a stupid move on my behalf. I just had them my whole life, and I never went and got a gun permit." But who knew Amerika would turn so socialist so fast?

that doesn't seem like a particularly huge "arsenal" but at least you got a laugh out of it.

that's something, i guess.

650 rounds of .22LR! The horror!

That's like, what.. 13 bricks?

Guy's obviously a little too, ah, "obsessed". There's probably more behind this...

'41 armor-piercing, aluminum-tipped rounds that explode on impact.'

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's precisely one species of "big game" that wears armor, and I don't think it's legal to hunt them.

Any centerfire rifle cartridge is technically "armor piercing," meaning it can go through a standard kevlar vest. Whenever you hear about "armor piercing" rounds in media - unless they are specifically referring to modified pistol cartridges - they are talking about any standard rifle round, and hyping the ballistic properties for sensationalist purposes.

At least they didn't find the phased plasma rifle in a 40-watt range.

only what you see on the wall, pal

ok, I don't get it...

.22 rounds are mostly for small game and generally aren't used for killing people. 650 rounds, if you are an avid hunter or shooter is not an obscene amount.

41 AP rounds aren't a big deal either. I don't know what he would use them for but its probably something to have just to have...

I don't have any guns, but I think if you're an avid hunter or shooter, there is nothing unreasonable about having nine rifles, eight shotguns, and a pistol. Maybe some of them are old (he said heirlooms) and he doesn't use them. It's like having old sneakers you don't wear.

I do think he is an idiot for not registering them or having them locked up in a safe.

Also, John, I don't understand your article(s). I don't understand where the sarcasm is directed at. I know people are hoarding weapons because they are afraid Obama might try to pass legislation on firearms but I do not see this as the case.

Ah, the classic guns = sneakers argument.

You can have 100 guns but you only have 2 hands.
Think about it.
Just keep that shit locked up.

But the 11-year-old son has two hands too!

I had a .22 rifle when I was 12.. I never did anything stupid with it.

Why? Because my father taught me the difference between right and wrong.

Got my first .22 pistol when I was 13, as a bar mitzvah present. I'd go target shooting with my dad. Some kids are actually responsible with firearms.

So we're going to take a guy with no criminal history and a kid and put him in prison because we disagree with his hobby?

Seems kinda silly to me. He didn't hurt anyone and as far as the article goes he didn't endanger anyone. So where's the crime? The crime is in disagreeing with gun control nuts. Who are as unamerican as socialists and national socialists.

he really should have stored them outside the city limits.
only in NYC is this a crime. and who counts .22 rimfire ammo? they sell them in bulk in milk carton containers.

"So we're going to take a guy with no criminal history and a kid and put him in prison because we disagree with his hobby?"

Or, just because that hobby is illegal.

But hey, he has a perfectly rational justification. He uses him to hunt upstate, so he's not always breaking the law. Just happens that he was when he got caught.

But we really don't want to enforce the laws all the time, do we? Especially when people have perfectly good rationalizations in their own minds as to why they're personally above the law? Come on!

I mean, he just never got around to getting a permit. Like now we're going to start making people do paperwork? Get a drivers license, get plates for their cars? I mean, even if driving is just their hobby? Or if they just drive upstate to do a little hunting once in a while?

He wasn't actually going to kill any animals. He was going to show superior force and let them give themselves up on their own.

This article was extremely difficult to read. I'd rather have Jen's grammatical mistakes than such a ridiculous amount of over-the-top sarcasm. There are writers with a light touch, and then there are heavy-handed hacks like JDS.

so, anyone with more than one pair is... what, GREEDY?

Is that photo of Anthony Cortese shown with a small deer head complete with itty-bitty antlers supposed to be an example of his "big game hunting?"

No way that's big game hunting. This is big game hunting!

a few things:
1. not wanting to be too judgmental, this guy is clearly a clown for not registering his weapons despite the idiocy of local & state regulations: if i invested that much itme & money into hunting i'd certainly take steps to ensure that it wasn't all taken away from me for totally arbitrary reasons. but;
2. this guy, as far as we know, wasn't hurting anyone.
3. if you are an avid hunter, this amount of hardware is actually reasonable: there are different guns for fowl, small game, large game, then there are different seasons -- for instance new york has a separate muzzle loading season. + .22 rifles for practice (since the ammunition is so cheap compared to other sizes) + double it all for his kid, + maybe an extra if friends come along. this is, although certainly rare for NYC, really not that major.
4. am i the only person here who finds this piece inconsistent with http://gothamist.com/2009/09/29/eardrum-blasting_sound_cannon_comin.php ?

No prob with hunting, guns, etc., but what is the the story with the gun on the front porch? Enclosed or just sitting there? Same with the handgun in the garage. Loose or cased and locked? I've been shooting guns since I was a little kid. Nothing wrong with guns and kids. But I sure hope he practiced good gun safety with security & locks a kid can't get past. No matter how responsible the kid, they have an innate knack for messing up. I've got the scars to prove it. Not a big story, but sounds like a knucklehead that makes things tough for responsible gun owners everywhere. But hey, it's Staten Island. The Alabama of NYC.

Is no one else questioning why a "neighborhood drug dealer" knew about his guns? Perhaps this guy isn't as clean as he says he is. If i had guns (and maybe i do), i certainly wouldn't be associating with known criminals.

And also? a .22 is more or less the smallest commercial ammo you can buy. You hunt squirrels with it. It's basically a (small) step up from an airgun.

Sounds like a pretty standard hunter's "arsenal" to me. But he was a dumbass for keeping them in the city unregistered. My "arsenal" is up in the Adirondacks. It would be nice if I were allowed to keep a few in the city without a hassle so I could go hunting elsewhere without having to go to the Adirondacks first, but the cost and trouble to get them registered isn't worth it .

As others have said regarding .22 rounds, they are super cheap and you can shoot a gazillion in a few hours if you are target shooting.
