To construct the World Trade Center, Greenwich Street was disconnected from the Battery to the south and what came to be known as Tribeca to the north. Now, the city is attempting to reintegrate the street into a new neighborhood by extending it through the redeveloped WTC site. So the 41 acres south of the World Trade Center site, between Broadway and West Street, is being rebranded "Greenwich South." (Take that, Tribeca North!) The Downtown Alliance has just released a design study full of big ideas for the neighborhood; their ambitious plans foresee "a model for the 21st century business district."
Radiating optimism with pretty renderings, the main thrust of their concept is to create a neighborhood with mixed-use buildings and lots of activity so the area becomes less of a ghost town at night, and more of a vibrant, 24/7 community. (Some people would just be happy with a decent grocery store.) But come on, this "could be the linchpin of Lower Manhattan," people! Let's get excited: The whole vision is on the Downtown Alliance website for your perusal. [Via Curbed]

Give me a break. They'll do anything to justify selling their shit at a 50% premium.
Its battery park city and its still a landfill for WTC.
battery park is pretty much one of the most boring parts of the city.. how about a new red light district? that'd keep things vibrant.. or vibrating..
While renaming BPC "Greenwich South" is a stretch, I am all in favor of reconnecting Greenwich Street. As it is, you have to walk all the way east, around the WTC site, gobs of lemming tourists, etc, then circle back to hit Greenwich Street again.
As far as seediness though, the south stretch of Greenwich street is pretty filthy, there's the rock club Pussycat Lounge, Trinity Gym (Downtown Manhattan's version of Gleason's) and a little bodega where if you go through, there's a secret back room filled with lap-dancing strippers.
Bodega ehhh?
Back room ehhh?
Strippers ehhh?
Continue please...
:D
it's called dirty mike's - in the back of cordato's pizza. 10 bucks a dance back in the day.
ROFL, look at their site plan. They call it mixed use, but really there's the "work area," the "eat area," and the "shop area." How very mixed-use.
Urban planning must be one of the only fields where no one ever learns anything.
Ok, first @NYCSniper and @Kojack BPC is stay the same. Greenwich south is the area in the yellow.
There is also info on it all over the East side on Zuccoti park near Broadway.
I wish they could spend a little less on this and a bit more on cleaning up the dog poo and urine all over the neighborhood.
I do like the idea of Greenwich going through. It will be an easier walk to wholefoods!
This is worse than "South Slope"
Great, another ghetto for white people..
I still wish West Bushwick joined to lexicon - I mean that is the proper term for stops off the L train from Grand through DeKalb.
