Video: Eardrum-Blasting Sound Cannon Coming to a Protest Near You?
Have you seen this intense outtake from Children of Men, showing riot police blasting "fugees" with some sort of horrible "sound cannon"? Oh, actually, this isn't from a fictional movie about a dystopian police state; it's from last week in Pittsburgh, where G20 protesters had dared assemble without a permit from the government. For that, they were dispersed with the Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD), which some fear is loud enough to damage eardrums and even cause fatal aneurysms. Like Freedom Rock, you really need to turn it up, man:
This is the first time police have used the LRAD against civilians; it was developed by the military and previously deployed against Somali pirates and Iraqi insurgents. And Pittsburgh police bureau chief tells the New York Times, "Other law enforcement agencies will be watching to see how it was used. It served its purpose well." Better bring some earplugs to the next Critical Mass ride.
But the Daily Show's Jon Stewart wasn't too impressed by the LRAD, and wondered whether protesters would be dispersed, or merely forced to cover their ears: "They're anarchists; do you know what kind of music these people listen to? That cannon is probably their ringtone by now!" Maybe authorities need the pain ray to really make a dent? Below, the full Daily Show segment on the G20 summit, and another disturbing video showing laughing Pittsburgh cops gathering for a trophy photo with a kneeling, handcuffed protester. the protesters on that day were breaking small businesses's store fronts, rolling trash carts toward police, and throwing bikes at officers. i think the police response was restrained and warranted. were there any taserings?
the following day, an organization did get a permit and there was a very large peaceful demonstration.
The police allowed this non-permitted protest to march on for a quite a while before asking them to disperse. Only when they were reaching the no go limits of the convention area and then not dispersing did this happen. I'm not pro police violence, or any violence, but it's not like these guys weren't warned. And very few to no heads were cracked... so there's that.
Protesting is most effective when done directly against its target. If you buy moldy bread, you don`t yell curses from down the block, you talk to the guy who sold it to you. If citizens really have any rights to protest in this country then it should not be up to the people they are protesting against to tell them where they are allowed to congregate. What a joke.
some protesters, a tiny tiny minority, were violent, and it would have been one thing if they were the only ones who got the LRAD. they weren't. furthermore, there are well-documented cases across the US and canada that the violent protesters are generally agent provocateurs in the employ of local police or other agencies. so that's also a possibility.
secondly, the 'granting' of permits for people to exercise their RIGHTS to freedom of speech and assembly is, itself, an affront to the constitution. but, nonetheless, there were a great deal of permits requested for G20. most of those requests were ignored entirely, and a good portion were denied at the last minute. that, to me, is an unacceptable affront to the constitution.
finally, this is yet another step in the criminalization of dissent. if you don't understand how grave the criminalization of dissent is to the liberties and foundations of this nation, i'm not going to try to explain it to you.
as usual the arguement will come up.
if you dont like it move to zimbabwe (or other third world shithole)
the answer to that is simple...
you can move to Libya, Iran or North Korea etc.
and then you KNOW you have no right to peaceably assemble, no rights to seek redress from the government, no right to express your freedom of speech.
the sheeple dont realize that slowly and surely the only time people are actually confronted with the full force of the law is when they exercize their constitutional rights, everyone says yeah WE have freedom of speech, just try to exercize it and see what happens.
shout outs to the Westboro Baptist Church, i defend your right to express your views no matter how reprehensible or regugnant they are.

Perhaps they should turn that on the bullying and drunken police officers infesting our society. It would do more good that way.
The sound cannon is not as cool as the Active Denial System.
Aka, the Pain Ray.

Whoops. Note to self: Read Article before posting.
In Summary: Pain Ray > Sound Cannon.
Discovery Channel's show "Future Weapons" did a segment on LRADs with a demonstration. I wouldn't want one used on me.
pigs:

If its good enough for pirates and insurgents, it sure as hell is good enough for the citizenry of the Stars and Stripes!
sorry jo(h)ns--i fail to find any humor in these draconian military measures being used on american citizens.

Freedom Rock! Holy shit, great reference! Talk about old school obscure.

Are any radical political movements in this country organized? Or do they just gather in cities and do dumb shit and yell senseless crap?
Yet another reason why the citizenry should be armed.
