Cop Cars Banned From Parking On Brooklyn Sidewalk!

In a radical move, the DOT will begin prohibiting cops from parking on the sidewalk outside the Hoyt-Schermerhorn subway station in Brooklyn. Officers at Transit Bureau District 30 have parked on the sidewalk for years, but a new pedestrian plaza set to open next month will mean the end of a longstanding police privilege. Pedestrians and straphangers are rejoicing, with Jameer Henson, a law clerk, telling the Daily News, "In the mornings it always bottlenecks at the top of the steps because there's only like half a sidewalk for the people coming and going to the subway. I won't be sad to see the cars go."

But law enforcement officers are upset about the law being enforced! "It's not a very bright idea," one transit detective tells the News. "There's literally nowhere for us to park around here. That's why we're on the sidewalk in the first place." The new pedestrian mall is temporary, but DOT officials plan to extend the sidewalk and make it a permanent gathering space over the next two years. Also a bad idea, says the detective: "This street's already too crowded. Cars can barely get by as it is with all the traffic and double-parking going on. Just imagine if you have 50 people sitting in the street." First pedestrians take over the sidewalk, then the streets—next thing you know they'll be spreading a picnic blanket on Ray Kelly's desk!

Well ten officers, here's a novel idea.. DO YOUR JOB, ticket the double parkers since that's a traffic offense and we won't have this problem, will we??

"Cars can barely get by as it is with all the traffic and double-parking going on."

Oh, if only we had some sort of group to enforce the laws against double-parking. I don't know what sort of group it would be -- I'm just brainstorming here. Maybe civilians equipped with certain powers and uniforms? We really just need someone willing to police traffic -- hey, we could even call them that! The "police traffic."

Nah, never mind -- if we were to set up a group like that, they'd pretty quickly become a bunch of lazy, entitled jerks who caused as many traffic problems as they fixed. Forget I said anything.

They are all busy chasing around and ticketing the same five UPS trucks all day long.

so who is gonna enforce this again? the same cops that want to keep parking there? That sounds like a winning plan.

Police cars should be banned from parking on any sidewalk, anywhere. And for that matter, any bike lane, bus lane, fire lane, or any zone that is not a sanctioned parking spot.

"There's literally nowhere for us to park around here. That's why we're on the sidewalk in the first place."

Here's a novel idea: How about reducing the number of cruisers at each precinct in favor of motorcycle, bicycle, and pedestrian details? Also, don't let cops park their civilian vehicles in front of the station either. Make them commute by train like the rest of us.

woah... slow down with those "far-out" ideas there buddy.

"Also, don't let cops park their civilian vehicles in front of the station either. Make them commute by train like the rest of us."

That's really the main problem. It's not that there are too many RMPs parked for long periods; some precincts actually don't even have enough to cover every sector every shift. Those that there are could easily fit into designated spots, if those spots weren't used by personal vehicles.

There are at least 12 "police parking only" spots on ly street starting in front of my building on either side of the street and running to the precinct at the corner. They're all usually filled but at any given time only perhaps four are used by official vehicles -- counting the one auxiliary van that seems never to be moved. The rest most likely guys who could've ridden the LIRR (which, of course, they can do for free). The rest, like those of us who live in the neighborhood, could accept that we have to walk three or four blocks after parking (the horror!).

Speaking of double-parking--I wish they'd do something about it on Court Street. It's a chronic problem, and downright dangerous the way people double-park right in the middle of the street there.

"There's literally nowhere for us to park around here. That's why we're on the sidewalk in the first place."

gotta use that one next time i get ticketed.

Gee wizz.

Next you'll be telling the cops at Bergen & Flatbush to stop using one traffic lane and the sidewalk for their personal cars. And those guys on Washington and Park Place. They can't use the sidewalk any more? Or turn that block on Grand between Park Place and Prospect into their personal parking lot?

There's a spot on Canal Street around the corner from the 5th Precinct where they seem to park their Cushmans all the time. It's right in front of a fire hydrant, of course. Hey, since the plebeian masses can't legally park in front of a hydrant, that means more spots for them, right?
