Queens House Wrecked By Oil Delivery Oops

092809fueloops.jpg Last week a driver for Ferrantino Fuel made a delivery of 100 gallons of oil to a Queens home, which obviously wouldn't be noteworthy, if not for the fact that the house doesn't even have an oil tank. And it has never had an oil tank; the heating oil was just funneled through an outside pump, flooding the basement. Now homeowner John Byas's newly renovated basement is ruined, his carpet yanked up, his furniture piled outside in a heap, and wife hospitalized from the fumes.

Byas's daughter Monica Sinclair was the only one home at the time, and she tells CBS2 the Ferrantino deliveryman "was at a total loss. He was just demanding cash payment from us now, after delivering all this oil, 100 gallons." The family is forced out of the home for now, and the fumes are so intense that firefighters can't spend more than 20 minutes on the scene. Byas says, "I have to go to the doctor—I've been exposed to this oil yesterday, trying to salvage and clean up, It's no use, all our stuff is lost." Ferrantino Fuel has apologized for the mistake, but hey, whaddaya gonna do?

I seriously don't understand how this happens—how does on pump oil into a house that doesn't have an oil tank? Through the basement window?

Watch the video.
You can see that the home was at one point outfitted for oil and had a pipe outside.
But it's not attached to anything inside anymore.

I smell a building code violation.

must have been a spigot that looked like an oil hookup?

man, what are the chances?!

I swear I've heard about this a few times. Always the same story about a clueless delivery guy dumping hundreds of gallons of heating oil into someone's basement.

This happened to me! Rental property with three units in Brooklyn. OMG, the smell!!!!

Had oil heat at one time, hence the delivery pipe-thingy into the basement, but it wasn't hooked up to anything on the inside. Yes, the oil company is seriously to blame, but FDNY told us that homeowners/landlords need to cover old spouts with concrete to protect themselves. Oil companies can't deliver to a home with a concreted-over spout.

This has happened at my house twice... though we have an oil tank, the delivery company (two different companies, actually) has not heard the fill whistle and has overfilled our tank to the point that oil comes out the top and goes all over the basement floor. We would come home and the house would wreak of oil, we would have to call the company, who would reluctantly come clean it up, and the house would smell for weeks afterward. People really need to pay better attention when doing things like this!

Has this company considered verifying delivery BEFORE pumping the oil out at the location? Especially if they still needed payment.

Sue the FUCK out of Ferrantino Fuel....

These clowns had been screwing up the heat and hot water in my building for years and years. Landlord finally got another contract with someone else. Pack of effin' idiots.

Ferrantino disappears in 3...2...1...

Hopefully for the family this company has some solid insurance, because between their liability in destroying the house and the EPA fines, they might just try to fold and make a run for it.

Be careful how you use the word family when talking about "Ferrantino."

Reading all these comments I'm very curious how many old buildings have these pipes just sitting there waiting to be dumped into by some idiot truck driver.

"You don't gotta tank? Well, Mr. Farrantino says you're gettin' da oil anyway. You gotta problem with that?"

The guys who operate these oil trucks tend to be lug heads with low IQ. I mean, who else wpould do this kind of a job?? It's not all that surprising. I bet it happens often.
