Film director Roman Polanski, who fled the U.S. in 1978 after being convicted of raping a 13-year-old, was arrested in Switzerland, where he was scheduled to receive an award at the Zurich Film Festival. The 76-year-old was taken into custody at his hotel.
According to the NY Times, Polanski, who directed Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby and The Pianist (for which he won an Oscar), "is being held in provisional detention in preparation for a possible extradition to the United States." The LA Times reports that the LA County DA's office "learned last week that Polanski had plans to travel to Zurich this weekend... Prosecutors sent a provisional arrest warrant to the U.S. Justice Department, which presented it to Swiss authorities. On at least two previous occasions, the district attorney’s office has received reports that Polanski had travel arrangements to countries with extradition treaties with the U.S. and prepared paperwork for his arrest," but Polanski would apparently find out and not travel.
The Smoking Gun has the "harrowing 1977 grand jury testimony of the 13-year-old California girl with whom the director had sex after plying her with Champagne and a Quaalude at the Los Angeles home of Jack Nicholson," noting, "At one point, according to Gailey's testimony, Polanski asked the 13-year-old if she was 'on the pill,' and 'When did you last have your period?'" However, Gailey, now Samantha Geimer, has asked for the charges to be dropped, as have Polanski's lawyers who cited possible misconduct by the LA DA's office and court.

leave the poor guy alone, he's been through enough. aside from this depressing news, check out my new guilty pleasure and have a laugh at http://www.fatkidsfalling.com
"Leave the poor guy alone, he's been through enough"??
Hmm, last I heard, in America, you don't get to escape punishment for a heinous crime (that you were CONVICTED of) just because A) you're famous, B) you're old, C) you fled the country to live a life of ease in a country that doesn't extradite its citizens, D) you have tragedy in your past, and/or E) your victim is just sick to death of all the publicity and wants to move on with her life.
Let's not forget that he drugged and raped a child in a cold-blooded and premeditated way. He should pay the same penalty that a regular joe convicted of the same crime would pay.
Would you be so forgiving if it was your daughter this grown man drugged and raped? I find this cavalier attitude regarding such a despicable crime very disturbing. I certainly hope you don't have access to any children, your own or anybody else's.
If it's been 32 years and the girl doesn't want to pursue it they should drop the charges. Case closed. We all know this guy is messed up in the head, and I don't know about you but I was perfectly happy to have him in Europe and not in the States. Now he'll go to jail and we get to pay for it.
Regardless, the case has to go through the system. The Legal system can't play favorites, despite the current wishes of the victim.
IMO, after the trial, he'll get sentenced more fro fleeing then the actual crime.
Bring him back, dismiss all of the charges per the victim's request and let the guy back into the US. At 76, all he can do now is wave his walker inappropriately towards young teens.
Is that what kids are calling it nowadays?
I'm still wondering if the noms for "The Pianist" were a ploy to get him to come back based on his artistic pride, or did they seriously set aside their troubles with him to give him an award for his work?
Forget it, kitty-kat ... it's only Chinatown.
You guys don't seem to get it. If he was convicted, there's no dropping the charges. Charges can only be dismissed before trial/conviction. He's been convicted, the only thing left to do is sentencing. If he feels there was prosecutorial misconduct or other problems with his trial, he can appeal the conviction.
Drop the charges? Learn the law, Polanski was indicted and convicted. He ran and has eluded capture for 31 years.
It's time he served his time-- he drugged and raped a young girl... 31 years passing doesn't make it ok--
Roman Polanski anally penetrated a 13 year old girl after making an effort to arrange to meet her. The horrible tribulations he's endured over the last 30 include ski holidays in Gstaad and attending concerts at l'Orchestre de Paris.
from the Grand Jury testimony -
Q. What happened then?
And I just went– and he goes — and then he put me – wait. Then he lifted up my legs farther and he went in through my anus.
Q. Did you resist at that time?
A. A little bit, but not really because –(pause)
Q. Because what?
A. Because I was afraid of him.
Roman Polanski did a little jail time (42 days) , not years of PRISON time, for the offense, but fled the country because the now-deceased judge was going to change the plea agreement against Roman Polanski.
I have no idea if it was legal in 1977 California for a judge to undo a plea agreement.
He raped a little girl. He should pay for his crime. That's all there is to it.
He absolutely needs to face a judge and deal with this. but when the victim no longer feels the need to pursue the matter, there's not much sense in the State locking him away. At worst, he should serve time for felony evasion.
This guy needs to die in jail. I'm tired of these rich scumbags getting away with crimes.
40 something guy drugs and rapes a young 13 yr old. He needs to pay for his crimes.
i dont see what the big deal is.
