Incarcerated Peter Braunstein Is Still Crazy!

2009_09_peterbraun.jpg Well, who wouldn't visit a convicted kidnapper and sex attacker to visit him in prison?! The Daily News' Jane Ridley says of her visit to see Peter Braunstein, "I went, though I really don't care what he has to say. I went because he's this Hannibal Lechter-style creep you just have to see - and stare at in the way we look at car accidents we pass on the highway." Good reason—pass the fava beans and Chianti!

Ridley's column is chock full of nutty Braunstein-isms. Referring to the woman he kidnapped and terrorized for 13 hours, "She [the victim] wakes up and goes about her day - and it could be a good day, a bad day, a forgettable day - but she wouldn't be having any kind of day at all if I'd killed her." And when Ridley mentions his ex-girlfriend, Braunstein "goes ballistic" and muses, "I've realized that it's possible to hate someone so much that killing them wouldn't satisfy you." Of course, this interview isn't as crazy as his first jailhouse interview from 2007, but it does show progress, since back then he said of his ex, "I fantasize about going back in time and killing Jane."

The Daily News even has video of Braunstein talking. It might make your head spin, though.

You should be ashamed of yourself for playing party to this. It's not enough that the Daily News is allowing him to further taunt & terrorize his victims from prison, but you find it worthy to repeat that.

Worse of all, why would you highlight his power-trip fantasy? What were you thinking?

I find it interesting. An exploration into the human condition is of great value. Killer or not, I want to seethis guy interviewed, I want to know how this guy ticks, how a wackjob/killer functions... It is educational. Say you meet a guy at a bar, and the guy behaves in the manner this guy behaves. Would it not tip you off to steering clear of him?

Don't criminalize what could save your life.

Perhaps, but one should distinguish between voyeurism at others expense and sincere investigation.

It's manifest from both the original Daily News article and this post that the intent is sheer shock value and page views ("I really don't care what he has to say", and " '...stare at in the way we look at car accidents we pass on the highway.' Good reason—pass the fava beans and Chianti!").

This guy terrorized someone for hours, and then he goes on to name her and other victims and the Daily News duly reports that. How can you consider that in any way responsible? What's going to come up when someone Googles the victim's names? Linking to that article and further broadcasting it will simply amplify that in search engine ratings.

Some things should be left unexplored.
