NYPD Allegedly Turns Head to Gay Bashing Attack

phphmOCXBPM.jpg This past Friday night, WPLJ DJ Blake Hayes, cabaret and Broadway performer Danny Calvert and another friend were walking down 9th Avenue in Hell's Kitchen when a cigarette butt was thrown at them by a man outside of McCoy's bar, followed by the words, "Keep moving, faggot."

Hayes reports back on his website that they "exchanged words, more and more heated, until he started to approach us, threatening violence. Before we knew it, he had thrown one friend against a car, denting it. The other took two punches to the face, cutting his lip before the bouncer at McCoy's came out and stopped him."

The police were called and five officers arrived; after recounting the incident to them they were told the NYPD wouldn't be taking down their attacker's information, nor would they be able to press charges. As for the dented car, the officers told them, "They're NJ plates, we can't do anything."

The man was let back into the bar by the very bouncer who witnessed the incident and stopped the attack from escalating any further. Hayes now asks that people call McCoy's to challenge that action, and call "the police precinct that refused to take an open complaint—a legal right." We've contacted the NYPD and will update with their comment should we get one.

THIS IS NOT A STORY PLEASE MAKE IT GO AWAY

  • Mark

HOW "SELF-LOATHING" IS IT to expect everyone else to risk their own safety for YOU, protecting and defending YOU, fighting all your fights for YOU? While you do NOTHING at all?

HOW "SELF-LOATHING" IS IT to insist upon and indulge your Urban Gay Fantasy? To live in crime-ridden cities, under constant threat of physical attack, surrounded by those who hate and resent you? Without even ANY interest in developing ANY skills to fight back and defend yourselves? Without even acknowledging this danger?! Talk about a glaring case of cognitive dissonance.

HOW "SELF-LOATHING" IS IT to expect cops to be YOUR personal security crew despite their record of indifference?

ENOUGH OF THIS URBAN GAY FANTASY.

    GROW UP.

Time for the truth: if you act Gay, walk Gay, talk Gay GREAT. More power to you. BUT YOU ARE A TARGET. YOU BETTER LEARN TO FIGHT GAY.

  • 5borough

What grown man would go to the press with this? These guys are all pathetic. One loser throws a cigarette butt NEAR four guys and calls them faggots, wow crime of the century! I've certainly walked away from a lot worse than that. FOUR guys stop to argue with a man who is obviously an ass, then get in a fight and lose. This is all fine but they should have gone home and bar should toss the other guy. Instead they call the cops and when they don't like the truth (that they got in a fight and weren't randomly attacked) they call the press. Losers and rats, I hope they're not from NYC.

You don't CHOOSE to get in a fight and then call the cops when you lose. These guys are crying wolf and making it hard for the next real victim of gay-bashing.

  • Mark

STOP PRETENDING GAY MEN ARE HELPLESS.

There were FOUR SMART, SOBER, FIT, ABLE BODIED Gay guys NONE of whom were drunk, high or in wheelchairs, NONE of whom were in any way prevented from fighting back. Their "attacker" was one DRUNK guy with impaired consciousness and reflexes. AND THEY STILL LET HIM BEAT THEM AND INTIMIDATE THEM.

One of The Gays could have called the cops while the other two or three fought back and/or restrained the basher until the police arrived. What did these guys think was going to happen BETWEEN a call to the cops and the cops arrival?! That the basher would just stop his attack and politely wait?! RESTRAINING AN ATTACKER IS A MEANS OF SELF-DEFENSE. TO RESTRAIN AN ATTACKER YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO FIGHT. YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO SUBDUE AN OPPONENT WITH LITTLE OR NO SERIOUS INJURY. Not very hard to do. Especially if it's one old drunk guy.

How many guys who go out in groups actually make an action plan like that? How many even care to?

It is lazy, arrogant and self-entitled (not to mention self-loathing) to live in a large dangerous city where anti-Gay hate crimes occur on a demonstrably regular basis WITHOUT any means of self-defense.

I am so tired of Gays who are so fucking deluded by PC bullshit they feel entitled to pity and protection from others. No one EVER got their full civil rights by feeling self-entitled. They had to fight.

STOP PRETENDING GAY MEN ARE HELPLESS.

  • TheMactastic

@Rocknrope - Not sure what the name of the bar has to do with anything.

  • misse

The NYPD would rather write tickets for open containers than actually do their job to serve and protect.

  • This is why we can't have nice things.

Wouldn't be surprised if he was the assaulter.

  • leon

also - unlike cops, pigs are very intelligent.

cops on the other hand are not and as far as this gothamite is concerned, deserve no respect at all.

  • zodak

    cleo FTW!

  • leon

    pointsguy,

you call cops "pigs" but this is insulting to actual pigs. our 4-legged friends deserve to be treated with respect.

  • calcetines

    lol!

  • BARACKNBINGO

Gays just want to be treated the same as everyone else is treated by the the NYPD.... thats the endless line used by every "special group" that wants something from the cops. Well, welcome to the real world. Thats how everyone gets treated... the cops blow off shitt regardless of who you are... so gay guys shouldnt feel so bad because they do it to non gays too.

I love how cop haters want the cops to be "tough on crime" and to "kick ass" when they are the "victims". Otherwise, they hate the cops and complain about them.

Dont call the cops and dont get involved with asssholes on the street... just keep walking and you will find out life is easier that way. Who gives a shitt what some drunk loser says ???.....

  • jaycjay

"Who gives a shitt what some drunk loser says ???....."

Yep. Hey, I'll admit I've been regrettably in my own bar fights. It's stupid, but I've gotten drunk and stupid a few times. Happily, not often, and happily years in the past.

I've also simply walked past drunk assholes not giving a damn what they have to say, and gone home with only a memory of what an idiot some anonymous guy on the street was.

Straight, gay, whatever. Getting into a "exchanged words, more and more heated" situation is a choice. And the cops see it that way, too.

  • felixthecat2

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGbTb1tOLKc

Wouldn't be surprised if he was the assaulter.

  • longacre

Both sides in that video are complete dipshits, so using it to try to make a point in an unrelated case is pretty moronic. It's not nice to use gay slurs, but it is also not nice to fuck with the guy's carriage.

  • felixthecat2

He didn't do anything as you see in the video. That driver like the other drivers harass and threaten people. Those drivers do drink sometimes in that bar. Perhaps it was a carriage driver. The Warehouse/Stable is walking distance from that bar.

  • dadoc

Maybe you didn't read my post from above.

Be VERY careful about implicating someone in a criminal act unless you are VERY sure. Regardless of your leanings, you might incite further acts by some parties.

As the "old man" says: "You don't have to put on the red light...."

Don't you have any nice videos?

  • pointsguy

The pigs already made OT money on a previous incident they falsified, so they didn't need to do any work that evening.

    Oink.

    pigs = terrorists

THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK

    OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS

    CITY HALL

    NEW YORK, NY 10007

    (212) 788-7116

    **For Immediate Release**

    September 27, 2009

    Contact: Anthony Hogrebe 646-263-1487

    Release # 089-2009

Statement by Speaker Christine C. Quinn

Re: Reports of Anti-gay attack in Hell’s Kitchen

Early Saturday morning there was a report of an anti-LGBT attack in Hell’s Kitchen in which two individuals were the victims of a physical assault. I am obviously outraged by news that another bias attack has occurred in our city. But I am also deeply concerned by reports from the victims that NYPD officers responding to the scene did not appropriately recognize the seriousness of the incident. In fact, it has been reported that they failed to attempt to apprehend or even to collect contact information from the alleged assailant. If these reports are true, the behavior of the police officers involved was also outrageous and merits swift action by the police department.

In response I have spoken to Police Commissioner Kelly’s office. They have agreed to conduct an investigation of these reports, and to have police officials meet personally with the victims this week. I am very gratified that the police department has agreed to my requests, and urge them to complete a swift and thorough investigation.

One of the most significant tools that have helped us to combat hate crimes here in New York City is having a strong police response to incidents when they occur. There was a time in our city when victims of hate crimes did not feel that the police were their allies. Any time a crime of this nature occurs, victims need to know they will be taken seriously.

To their credit, the NYPD have demonstrated that they normally respond aggressively and appropriately to such crimes. But even one such faliure can begin to undermine all of our collaborative and historic efforts. In addition, every victim deserves to have their incident taken as seriously as any other. I will continue to work with advocates and the NYPD to increase and expand training when needed, so police officers have the tools they need to respond appropriately to bias attacks.

  • Gothampc

"in Hell’s Kitchen in which two individuals were the victims of a physical assault."

Hayes says three: one thrown against a car, two took punches to the face.

    So which is it?

And how did Hayes come out of this unharmed?

  • Gothampc

Oh wait, I see now. One thrown against the car, one took punches to the face. Reading comprehension is important.

  • schadenfreudian mensch

Didn't you hear? There's no need for further investigation. Viane Delgado was there and she said nothing happened as per the NY Post.

  • username12

This press release just went out a few hours ago regarding a new incident that happened right after midnight friday night on 9th ave in front of mc coys pub.

  • schadenfreudian mensch

You must be new here. It was a joke. Look up "Viane Delgado" on Gothamist.

  • dadoc

Another blogged event so far lacking backup and verification. Until then, will await something a bit less Brodigan-ish.

  • Gothampc

I think you should wait for something a bit less Haramis-ish.

  • dadoc

Thanks, forgot about that one. Gotta set up my own little lexicon of troublemakers.

  • RonNYC

I have two words: Pepper Spray. Shifts the balance in your favor.

  • Rocknrope

Not always. When you unleash mace, oftentimes everyone around you is just as incapacitated, including yourself.

  • felixthecat2

Wouldn't be surprised he's a NY carriage driver, they do drink in that bar. Perhaps this guy?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGbTb1tOLKc

  • dadoc

Firstly, would be very careful implying without VERY positive ID that a particular person is responsible for criminal act.

Next, this has nothing to do with Quinn or horses.

There is treatment for monomania. Please seek it.

Lastly.... "You don't have to put on the red light..."

  • felixthecat2

You're such an idiot. Just because I copied someone's post doesn't meant I am that person. Get a life old man

  • felixthecat2

Blame Christine Quinn who shuns from gay issues to gather non-gay support. She is a SELL-out and won her reelection by less than 1,000 votes. For those who voted for her, you are either dumb or rotten or both.

  • jaycjay

    "Blame Christine Quinn"

Right. Before she became Council Speaker, drunk guys in Hell's Kitchen bars would never harass gay guys on the street, and the NYPD would aggressively pursue any slight. These new developments are because of Christine Quinn.

    Thanks for the brilliant analysis.

  • felixthecat2

I love how little people know. Quinn did nothing when the police were making false arrests in Chelsea and QUINN did nothing. She refused to CRITICIZE NYPD. The community members asked her to push for changes in the force on how they treat homosexuals but she did nothing!!!!! There needs to be reform in the dept and the city council can pass legislation but QUINN refuses!!!!

  • jaycjay

Quinn did nothing. OK. Nor has any other Council president in the city's history. "Blame Quinn" is ridiculous. OK, she didn't solve this problem, but she certainly didn't cause it. Wow, she didn't reverse history and completely change the culture of the NYPD and the city population in general. What, you think she has some kind of superpowers?

Not a Quinn fan, but also not a fan of B.S.

  • cxb

C'mon, your analogies are dishonest. The Speaker before Quinn was NOT GAY.

WE legitimately think a GAY SPEAKER should / would be more infuriated by gay attacks and cops not caring than a straight Speaker or pol would.

    Duh.

In the cops defense, I'm straight, and they've never helped me in ANY of the dozens of crimes I've been the victim of in 20 years.

And 3 of those times I was covered in my own blood, and they refused to help.

Govt is inherently corrupt. (And I'm a socialist saying this!)

    PS: QUINN is a fraud.

  • thesg79

Terrible bar...they say they have food but they really just order food to be delivered.

  • longacre

Pro tip: If you're going to challenge what a belligerent drunk man says outside a bar, you oughta be ready to fight, there shouldn't be any "Before we knew it." Otherwise keep moving, no matter how offensive it is.

  • JacqueMehoff

I hope none of this stuff happens at Rudy's.

I'm two blocks from this place and am not surprised for some reason.

  • Gothampc

When is gothamist going to stop printing these stories that don't pass the smell test? The Corner Bistro story and the dog in the subway story were the same way.

4 gay guys stand around while 1 gay basher beats them all up. Does that sound plausible? If you've just seen your friend thrown against a car, are you going to stand around and let someone beat on you?

  • Rocknrope

Outside a bar called "McCoys," is this really any surprise?
