Jim Carroll Returned Home to Die in Diary Land

2009_09_jimcarroll2.jpg During his final days as he suffered from pneumonia and hep C, Jim Carroll had returned home to the same Inwood apartment where he was raised and detailed in his classic, The Basketball Diaries. Carroll went back to Inwood to save money and work on his first novel (which he finished!) in the apartment now decorated simply with a poetry event poster and a photo-triptych of Kurt Cobain. A friend of his tells the Times, “There’s a lot of the poetic there, of coming full circle."

Watched the "Basketball Diaries" movie the other night. A good adaptation and possibly one of Leonardo Dicaprio's strongest roles. It's incredible to me that Carroll and his gang were their bad boy thing in the mid 60's - the true punk pioneers.

    But Kurt...

Didn't the thought that you would never write another song

    Another feverish line or riff

    Make you think twice?

    That's what I don't understand

Because it's kept me alive, above any wounds

Wow. I'm just now finding out he passed. His work was fantastic. Fear of Dreaming has permanent residency on my shelf.
