Fort Greene Church Volunteer Charged with Sexual Abuse

2009_09_stlucystpats.JPG A Brooklyn man who serves as religious director for his local church was arrested for sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy. Police say 58-year-old Angelo Serrano molested the boy, a family friend, in the child's Williamsburg home. It was unclear if the abuse was connected to Serrano's role volunteering for St. Lucy-St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fort Greene. A neighbor said of Serrano, "He's a beautiful guy. He really loved the children. He spent a lot of time with them and all like that."

Police say that Serrano is being eyed in up to 17 other abuse cases. St. Lucy's says he has been removed from his position as religious director. Cops have also taken Serrano's computer out of his Fort Greene home. Another neighbor told WCBS, "He's a very friendly person, but I did notice that there are children, there are young boys that I've seen going out of the apartment."

Did his neighbor think that quote would help Serrano?

Religion is evil and irrational.

What are the odds he's a good christian republican?

That was my brother's Godfather. This is truly horrifying and saddening.

I grew up in this community and he was known for this type of behavior. There were rumors abouth this for over 15years. The parents are to blame because they knew about his reputation yet they still let their children sleep over his apt.

"who knows" -- you stated there were rumors for years, does that mean YOU suspected something and stayed silent?

And then you blame the parents ? Look in the mirror, you will find another person looking at you who is also to blame.

im sorry bob but in this country you are innocent until proven guilty i as well grew up in this neighborhood and heard the same rumors but not until there is proof can anyone do anything about it except keep your children away!! parents need to stop worrying about working so much and start taking care of their children more. its easy to drop your kids off at a church and leave for hours sometimes days with people you really dont know just because they are part of the church community and feel good about it at the end of the day. but kids need parental guidance more than anything. what good does working hard do when your kids inturn get screwed up by someone like this. i as well look in the mirror everyday and feel fine because i saw all the signs and heard all the rumors just as everyone else did but i kept myself away and kept my family away. as the parents of this 10 year old boy should have done and god only knows the others that are out there.

for the record Angelo Serrano was NOT a priest nor did he have a vow of celibacy. He was a sick man that happened to volunteer at the church. He could have easily been volunteering at a daycare or school or any other place.

A good Christian Republican and probably a Southerner...laughter

Celibacy is an aberration and a perversion...none of the clergy are innocent...they knew the score upon first entering the seminary and they didn't speak up because they knew they would be ousted. They are all guilty and not one of them has the power, authority or innocence to forgive them.

The Roman Catholic Church has always been a criminal empire...time to sink these dastards.

"Bob Schwiderski" -you shouldn't pass judgement on someone that heard a rumor and has no proof to do anything about it. At the time I heard of this rumor I was 12yo and I'm in my 20's now. I moved away and returned. As a young kid, this was not something I thought about. I just knew to stay away from him. I forgot he was even alive until this broke news. The one's to blame are the adults who have known him for years and continue to stand by him. As far as I go, I look in the mirror everyday and I'm proud of who I am, sorry no guilt or blame here.

Okay as for being innocent until proven guity is a crock and Im sick of people like this perv Angelo hurting our children. I was born and raised in this neighborhood, and fortunantly I was able to leave and raise my kids away froma monster like this. As for people suspecting that this was going on for 15 yrs u are as much guilty as this monster is. Hanother thing when it become okay fro parents to trust anyone with there kids, I just cant believe how we are so quick to leave any person with our kids okay just because we knew them for so many yrs. As for the church saying that he spent minimal time with kids is a crock this man along wiht another volunteer spent many hours wiht after school kids thats right he was with kids from 3 until 6 and then they also ran a summer camp program. Thats is just another example of how these churces are coevering up when they screw up and allow mosters liek this to prey on innocent kids. This has deeply sadden me as a parent and I hope we can learn from this that as parents we MUST protect our children. My prayers go out to this 10 yr boy and all the other victims who I pray come forward to keep this man off the streets. And to Angelo may u rot in Hell.....
