Brownstone Brooklyn, you never cease to amaze us. Long story short: Man buys brownstone in recently landmarked district of Prospect Heights from old woman. Old woman continues to live in the garden apartment. Man decides he wants to put a garage in there. LPC says they have no applications for Landmark approval for the address.
However, now Brownstoner reports that following some complaints that were filed, a Letter of Intent to Revoke and a stop work order were delivered by DoB. Will the old woman be kicked out? Will gas fumes soon be sputtering on to St. Mark's Avenue? Stay tuned!
Last year a garage was called the ultimate luxury; and there aren't many, at the time the article was written there were only around a dozen listings which included private garages. But would you really bust up a beautiful home and kick an old lady to the curb in order to get one?

WTF? She sold the house, the new owner can do whatever the hell he wants to. Damn Brooklyn residents think what want is somehow relevant.
I know, right? are there no workhouses or brothels where this woman can make herself useful!? The very thought of this welfare queen taking advantage of that good-natured owner sends shivers down my spine. /sarcasm
Yea how can you sell something to someone and then get upset that you're not allowed to stay? Maybe he signed a lease with the old lady, but either the lease ended or he'll have to pay her to break it. Sounds like he gets to call the shots no matter what.
not when you live in a large city where community needs often outweigh your personal needs. particularly if you live in a landmarked historic district. prospect heights is one of the most well preserved brownstone neighborhoods in the country and there are good reasons why people shouldn't do "whatever the hell" they want.
regardless of the landmarks status, a garage requires a curb cut which is against zoning laws. the stop work order was definitely needed.
and fyi to jen -- the new owner is a woman, not a man.
Isn't there a parking garage on Underhill?
Regardless of whether the house on the landmarks register or not, curb cuts devalue the streetscape and thus the neighboring houses. No man, or home, is an island. (Unless you live on island, but even there we share the same atmosphere.)
Also apparently, I'm an idiot and can't/don't read before spouting off. @duckumu said exactly what I wanted, better, and before me.
Let the old lady keep the apartment, but make her stand in the spot out front of the house when the owner takes the car out. Problem solved.
how can you prevent illegals curb cuts - I see this shat happening all over brooklyn lately
