Yassky Gets Nasty on Liu in Comptroller's Race Finale

2009_09_liuyassky2.jpg David Yassky is best known in some political circles as the man who was the only white candidate in 2006 for the Congressional seat being vacated by Major Owens, leading some to accuse him of racial carpetbagging. Now he has the unenviable task of trying to pull an upset in Tuesday's comptroller runoff election against John Liu, blocking him from being the first Asian-American elected to citywide office.

The Times has separate profiles on both Yassky and Liu, councilmen whom they describe having much in common from being workaholics to being adept at attracting smart staff members, not to mention their mutual love of blue shirts and gold ties. As the two head into their final debate tonight, Yassky has gone after the frontrunner with a negative ad that includes an attack on Liu's claim the he worked in a sweatshop. Liu in turn has released his own ad, trying to paint himself as all-inclusive with an umbrella of supporters that includes "black, white, Hispanic, Hasidic." Both videos are after the jump.

Blue shirts and yellow ties must be big this year.

I can't believe a candidate for comptroller actually went negative. For comptroller! It's not like they're vying to become the governor of New Jersey.

Yassky should attack that claim; Liu has lied about his upbringing multiple times.

if you have to rely on the daily news to try and take down your opponent, i'm willing to wager that your point doesn't matter for shit.

It's not fair to get down on Yassky for running against people of a different race. We have a black president, a black governor and a black comptroller who's going to be the next democratic candidate for mayor.

Liu was more negative since he made false claims about Yassky. When Yaskky refuted Liu's false accusations and even listed his past private and public experience, Liu continue to make these false statements. Liu doesn't answers the questions and just speaks his campaign slogans that he will be inclusive of all. But check his office staff, they are all Asian except for one hispanic woman. Is that inclusive? LIu will say anything that people want to hear. He will bankrupt the city. We can't trust Liu the Liar with our money.
