Cyclist Attacks Brooklyn Bus

Cyclist Armando Cruz was arrested after throwing a bottle through the window of a NYC bus, raining shards of glass onto the driver. Cruz had been riding down Flushing Avenue in Bushwick when police officers ordered him to pull over due to his "unsafe manner" of biking. He attempted to pedal away, but was cut off by the bus; he then threw his bottle through the bus driver's window. That must have been one hell of a throw, one hell of a heavy bottle, or one hell of a cheap bus window. Cruz was charged with "assault, menacing, and criminal mischief."

why is this being presented as a "bike" story, when it's just an "asshole" story? this would not be reported if it was some guy on foot, or some guy in a car.

I want to apologize on behalf of myself and all bicyclists everywhere, who are equally responsible for this heinous action. I don't know what we were thinking.

    get a car asshole

I don't have time to waste sitting in traffic. But I do love it when you get hysterical!

"That must have been one hell of a throw, one hell of a heavy bottle, or one hell of a cheap bus window."

Those windows are cheap as shit I've seen an irate fat guy literally punch through the windshield of a bus because the fat driver refused to let him on.

The foot chase that took place between them was hilarious though... well not so much for the stranded riders.

    Here it comes.....

    (insert bicycle-rider hate here)

  • matty

ok, I bet dollars to donuts this was yet another case of a cyclist unable to control his delusions of grandeur with regards to his own self-importance.

Guy sounds like a genuine nutcase, or maybe really drunk at the time. Ran from cops, threw a bottle at a bus driver... not exactly your average New Yorker...

  • thefacts

What are the chances that the hypocrites over at Streetsblog ignore this?

I bet they ignore it completely!

  • HOTCUP

if you throw basically anything hard at the windshield of a moving vehicle, it will give.

thanks for the tip. not sure what it has to do with the story since it was the driver-side window that shattered. I imagine windshields need to be a bit tougher than side windows as they are more likely to get hit with road debris, rocks, bugs, birds, babies, etc.

  • SikBug

Awesome, now if this was a car running from the cops he would have killed 10 people by running them over.

  • grizzzly

wow, he must have been biking pretty unsafely to actually get pulled over for it.

  • jibbly

Nah, you just have to run a red light. Depending if they feel like it, cops will pull you over for it. I ran a couple of consecutive reds on 4th Ave in Brooklyn and an NYPD cruiser pulled me over. They had every right to give me a ticket, but gave me a stern warning instead, mostly about my own safety, then let me ride away.

  • drewo

Would love to see the NYPD apply that same justice to the autos that routinely roll through red lights.

  • grizzzly

I'm pretty sure they do, but it all comes down to the cop's mood, your luck, and whether mercury is in retrograde. All traffic policing is super inconsistent.

That said, I try not to bike through red lights when a cop is sitting right there, and always at least stop long enough to check traffic.

If you gotta be charged with something... menacing is definitely the way to go.

  • vacantlook

Just to be clear, not every person on a bicycle is a "cyclist".

  • matty

Right, you have to be a white guy on a single speed fixie to be a cyclist. Glad we cleared that up.
