Video: New York iPhone User Speaks Out

It's been two years since lines wrapped around Apple stores as New Yorkers waited and waited to get their hands on a precious iPhone, but the masses are still unhappy with AT&T. That's right disgruntled iPhone owners: you are not iLone! CNET has gathered some of the complaints about AT&T's service and claims of coverage (one declares "My damn iPhone drops calls about 75 percent of the time inside my house"), and one New Yorker living near JFK airport aired his grievances on YouTube.

Chin up, you can always get those aggressions out by sketching something.

Oh, that's right, you were one of those with the raging hard-on when the new Iphone was released, I remember.

Speaking of ignoring reality, I would say that I had a better grasp of reality to recognize that AT&T in New York SUCKS, so regardless of how great the phone is, it's primary use of making and receiving wireless calls in NYC would be terrible, which is why I haven't jumped on the bandwagon, and I was right.

    Have fun with that compass.

But I do agree, something's screwy with Gothamist servers, hence the doublepost annoyance.

call me a "sheep" or an "idiot" or a "hipster" or whatever else makes you feel better about yourself, but i own an iphone.

    it's actually a great device.

and worked well for the first 2 years or so i had it.

although it is now completely, 100% useless.

it has nothing to do with having to wait 30 seconds for a map to load.

it has to do with having ZERO service in my apartment or where i work. and it almost never works on the street. my voicemails can literally take days to receive.

  • Rocknrope

So it's great, except for the phone part. Good luck with that.

You miss the point again. It's great, except for the AT&T part. These problems with dropped calls are not unique to iPhones. They're endemic to AT&T's network in the Greater NY area. Even AT&T has admitted recently that their network is not what it should be, although they claim they're trying hard.

What is it about Apple haters that makes them ignore reality?

Funny, I don't remember ever writing that I wanted to buy an iPhone 3GS. Maybe because I never wanted one. Please jog my memory with the appropriate quote, if you can. All I remember was a lot of misinformation and disinformation being slung around here, some of which I corrected.

Isn't what the article and most of the comments specifically saying that AT&T is terrible? It says something that certain people desperately have to drag the iPhone into it. FYI, if I was going to get an iPhone, I'd buy it, instantly cancel my AT&T contract and pay the early termination fee. Then I'd unlock the phone and stick a T-Mobile SIM card in it. That way, I wouldn't have to suffer AT&T and there's nothing they could do to me. I would have paid for the phone and I would have fullfilled their early termination clause, so they wouldn't be able to trash my credit rating.

    you remember my hard on?

    creepy.

And what is it with Gothamist's servers lately? I've been locked in Summary view for the last few days. The slightly paranoid part of me thinks that may be intentional to drive up page views. After all, in Summary view, people have to click on stories to read past the first couple of sentences, which doesn't tell us much. Deleting all Gothamist cookies and selecting Full view several times has not helped. Now I see a GoogleAnalytics error while posting.

    OH MY GOD!

It can take 30 seconds to load a map to find the restaurant I am going to for dinner!

Its like my magic phone is using a ...gasp...DIAL UP MODEM!

    The HORROR!

  • Spirit of 76

Do you have the vaguest idea what the complaints were about? Did you bother to watch the video? He said he wasn't able to make or receive phone calls consistently. What does this have to do with maps?

  • abcohen

AT&T service is nearly unusable around union square from 6pm - 9pm!

I cant wait for them to allow me to purchase the micro cell to improve their shitty network!

  • valeriob

they just released one. but they are asking $20/month extra...to fix THEIR shitty service the want another 20 bucks a month.

  • SikBug

You can always run it on T-Mobile too.

I think a lot of the drop call issue is the phone itself, my buddy brought his into apple and that gave him a new one no questions asked when they saw how many dropped calls he has had.

I have an iPhone that used to drop a ton of calls but since the last update and a jailbreak it's not too bad.

  • valeriob

iPhone on AT&T is like putting a paraplegic behind the wheel of a Lamborghini.

  • gothamguy

I think you mean "quadriplegic." Paraplegics usually have the use of their arms and can drive just fine in vehicles fitted with hand controls.

  • valeriob

damnit, you are correct, I meant quadriplegic.

Conceptually speaking, the iPhone would be the beautiful mastery of modern art and functionality, while the handicapable person would be AT&T making all sorts of sounds like Vroom Vroom but not going anywhere.

(Hey we've got this shiny new phone that our networks can't handle yet, BUY BUY BUY!)

  • Steven

Oh right smartphone and cell phones were plans cost $99+ month (data, voice, email, text) plus the $15 in taxes to just about every place you can imagine.

  • Rocknrope

Did you intend to communicate in English?

  • paperbackwriter

Best thing from the dvice comments:

"Either way, we need to all remember that a phone needs to be a phone first and foremost. Its not good for it to become a toy. How many pay phones do you see around anymore? Do you want to have a serious emergency and your phone won't make a call because you installed an app that makes it look like a glass of beer that you can pour?"

I don't care how inaccurate that comment is. It's golden.
