It's been two years since lines wrapped around Apple stores as New Yorkers waited and waited to get their hands on a precious iPhone, but the masses are still unhappy with AT&T. That's right disgruntled iPhone owners: you are not iLone! CNET has gathered some of the complaints about AT&T's service and claims of coverage (one declares "My damn iPhone drops calls about 75 percent of the time inside my house"), and one New Yorker living near JFK airport aired his grievances on YouTube.
Chin up, you can always get those aggressions out by sketching something.

those poor little apple fan boys.
bring me my tear vase that i may weep for them!
does att not drop calls if you aren't using an iphone? seems more like an att issue than having much to do with apple (other than their having an exclusive contract, but then there'd be no iphones if they hadn't.)
Zodak is a confirmed Apple hater. Anything having to do with the company, he hates. Don't expect rationality on this.
This video represents absolutely everything I hate about my generation. Kudos - you nailed it.
This kid is too whiny for me. His letter is laced with attitude and not the least but professional. He let his emotions get the best of him.
I got the iPhone in July and can to tell you, I have had incredible service for data and voice not just in Manhattan, but also in all surrounding area's and boroughs, Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Upstate, Boston, Cape Cod, down south, out west, mid west etc. In fact, the phone sometimes works below ground in the subway.
Issues? I call AT&T and have always, so far, received A+ service from Tech Support and Customer Care—discounts etc.
My biggest gripe:
Can't send photo's in text and can't view flash videos (but I also understand the bandwidth predicament)
waaahhhh my toy doesn't work...
I have a Blackberry Bold, and I hate AT&T's service too. 3G is consistently in and out in Manhattan and BK, and I'm solidly on EDGE only for hours sometimes...
I have a crackberry from Verizon (which I got for $1.50 after promos and discounts!!!) and while I suffer in silence because I can't even get the iPhone, I am the only one in my office that gets cell phone service. While I may pay more for service, at least I get service!
I too have a Verizon Blackberry and while I do sometimes glance at iPhones with a touch of envy I also enjoy crystal clear service pretty much everywhere I go. And my job pays for it -- extra bonus!
The AT&T network was not ready for the bandwidth demands of all the Iphone users. Its runaway success is its weakness. They'll eventually get up to speed. And that affects everyone on the network as well, even those without the IPhone. The Times did a story about this. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/03/technology/companies/03att.html
Apple is at fault as well for only offering the Iphone exclusively to one network.
AT&T and has never been ready for anything, i had 3 days straight without service, for no known reason and no one AT&T could help, just an Oh Well type of response. In addition when i lived in manhattan, there was not one time, where if i was on a call and a bus, truck, ambulance, etc rode by, that my call wasn't dropped, literally every time i was on the phone in my apartment, my calls were dropped, so needless to say, in order to save my sanity i had no other choice but to switch carriers. Sounds like i made the right choice.
I don't care if Apple releases a phone that makes your morning coffee after giving you a back massage - there is no way in HELL I would go back to AT&T Service. Thank god I wasn't lured in by the gizmos like the other sheeple.
It's a fact that Verizon has the best network, and if you're in Manhattan, VZW is the best choice.
I was really intrigued when the iPhone first came out, and then quickly lost interest when I heard it was exclusive to AT&T.
I'd love if it was available on Verizon, but if it were, Verizon would probably insist on the iPhone using its clunky menu.
Oh no!
Not the Jesus phone!!
I just hope AT&T has their billing issues settled.
I know one subscriber who hasn't received a bill in 6 months. this was their early days.
and, how does corporations handle this when they can't reach their employees due to inferior service? there's always one person who tries to deviate from the normal corporate cell service. nevermind, I know the answer, bitch loud and often enough the higher ups will give in.
AT&T has AWFUL service!!!
DO NOT BUY THE iPHONE from AT&T - wait until a reliable carrier like Verizon gets the contract.
Here is the problem I see with that: CDMA phones get much shorter battery life than GSM phones (something about the way the radio works). So, walking around all day playing music, screwing around with apps, etc., will leave you very little talk time before you need to recharge.
Of course, if you could carry an extra battery around it wouldn't be as big of an issue but the non-removable battery means you can't. Instead, you will be charging it constantly, which will eventually cause the battery to hold less, meaning you charge it more often, making it hold even less...
More likely T-Mobile, since they also use GSM. Especially since Deutsche Telekom has been rumored to be interested in buying Sprint to merge with T-Mobile, creating a new industry giant. They obviously want more of the US market, and if getting the iPhone will help that, I bet they're willing to give Apple a lot of concessions.
Best thing from the dvice comments:
"Either way, we need to all remember that a phone needs to be a phone first and foremost. Its not good for it to become a toy. How many pay phones do you see around anymore? Do you want to have a serious emergency and your phone won't make a call because you installed an app that makes it look like a glass of beer that you can pour?"
I don't care how inaccurate that comment is. It's golden.
Oh right smartphone and cell phones were plans cost $99+ month (data, voice, email, text) plus the $15 in taxes to just about every place you can imagine.
Did you intend to communicate in English?
iPhone on AT&T is like putting a paraplegic behind the wheel of a Lamborghini.
I think you mean "quadriplegic." Paraplegics usually have the use of their arms and can drive just fine in vehicles fitted with hand controls.
damnit, you are correct, I meant quadriplegic.
Conceptually speaking, the iPhone would be the beautiful mastery of modern art and functionality, while the handicapable person would be AT&T making all sorts of sounds like Vroom Vroom but not going anywhere.
(Hey we've got this shiny new phone that our networks can't handle yet, BUY BUY BUY!)
You can always run it on T-Mobile too.
I think a lot of the drop call issue is the phone itself, my buddy brought his into apple and that gave him a new one no questions asked when they saw how many dropped calls he has had.
I have an iPhone that used to drop a ton of calls but since the last update and a jailbreak it's not too bad.
AT&T service is nearly unusable around union square from 6pm - 9pm!
I cant wait for them to allow me to purchase the micro cell to improve their shitty network!
they just released one. but they are asking $20/month extra...to fix THEIR shitty service the want another 20 bucks a month.
OH MY GOD!
It can take 30 seconds to load a map to find the restaurant I am going to for dinner!
Its like my magic phone is using a ...gasp...DIAL UP MODEM!
The HORROR!
Do you have the vaguest idea what the complaints were about? Did you bother to watch the video? He said he wasn't able to make or receive phone calls consistently. What does this have to do with maps?
call me a "sheep" or an "idiot" or a "hipster" or whatever else makes you feel better about yourself, but i own an iphone.
it's actually a great device.
and worked well for the first 2 years or so i had it.
although it is now completely, 100% useless.
it has nothing to do with having to wait 30 seconds for a map to load.
it has to do with having ZERO service in my apartment or where i work. and it almost never works on the street. my voicemails can literally take days to receive.
So it's great, except for the phone part. Good luck with that.
You miss the point again. It's great, except for the AT&T part. These problems with dropped calls are not unique to iPhones. They're endemic to AT&T's network in the Greater NY area. Even AT&T has admitted recently that their network is not what it should be, although they claim they're trying hard.
What is it about Apple haters that makes them ignore reality?
And what is it with Gothamist's servers lately? I've been locked in Summary view for the last few days. The slightly paranoid part of me thinks that may be intentional to drive up page views. After all, in Summary view, people have to click on stories to read past the first couple of sentences, which doesn't tell us much. Deleting all Gothamist cookies and selecting Full view several times has not helped. Now I see a GoogleAnalytics error while posting.
Oh, that's right, you were one of those with the raging hard-on when the new Iphone was released, I remember.
Speaking of ignoring reality, I would say that I had a better grasp of reality to recognize that AT&T in New York SUCKS, so regardless of how great the phone is, it's primary use of making and receiving wireless calls in NYC would be terrible, which is why I haven't jumped on the bandwagon, and I was right.
Have fun with that compass.
you remember my hard on?
creepy.
Funny, I don't remember ever writing that I wanted to buy an iPhone 3GS. Maybe because I never wanted one. Please jog my memory with the appropriate quote, if you can. All I remember was a lot of misinformation and disinformation being slung around here, some of which I corrected.
Isn't what the article and most of the comments specifically saying that AT&T is terrible? It says something that certain people desperately have to drag the iPhone into it. FYI, if I was going to get an iPhone, I'd buy it, instantly cancel my AT&T contract and pay the early termination fee. Then I'd unlock the phone and stick a T-Mobile SIM card in it. That way, I wouldn't have to suffer AT&T and there's nothing they could do to me. I would have paid for the phone and I would have fullfilled their early termination clause, so they wouldn't be able to trash my credit rating.

But I do agree, something's screwy with Gothamist servers, hence the doublepost annoyance.
