Bronx Mom Killed In Afternoon Shootout

2009_09_bxshoot.jpg Yesterday afternoon at around 3:30 p.m., a woman—who was trying to shield her 9-year-old child at the time— was fatally shot in violent crossfire on East 146th Street in the Bronx's Mott Haven neighborhood. According to MyFox NY, "Aisha Santiago, 25, was just coming home from doing laundry when someone opened fire on East 146th Street," and some witnesses think that the gunfire was from rival gangs, possibly the Bloods and Crips based on the groups' colors, while police suspect it might be the Latin Kings and another gang.

WABC 7 reports that two brothers had opened fire on a man at Willis Avenue and East 146th, "chasing him down the street as he fired back." Santiago tried to protect her child (relatives say she ducked behind her laundry cart while the Post says she pushed him into a building vestibule), but she was hit in the chest and died in front of the boy.

Another man was shot—a witness told NY1, "I seen the guy when he got shot. The guy was laying on the floor. He was gushing blood. I felt so bad. You know it's crazy you can't even stand or walk around cause you gotta watch for a gunshot or something."—but it's unclear whether he was a bystander or one of the suspects. Police are still looking for the shooters.

One more time with feeling: Gangs are terrorist organizations. Round them up and send 'em to a supermax Federal prison.

hey, do onto others as you'd have them do onto you. i say death by firing squad.

I would say that this classifies as a terrorist attack. So why are the cops down at Grand Central Station searching everyone's bags? Oh that's right! The government only cares about guys with bomb recipes and daydreams of carrying out terrorist attacks. In the meantime, there are organizations that are armed to the teeth and they are gunning down innocent people on the streets of America every single day. No one really cares because for the most part, they are poor people.

@ Splicer and Cranky. Good point. They are de facto terrorists. Treat 'em as such. In NJ, we have a good example to follow. The Attorney General there made it 1 of her top 3 priorities this year. The problem grew large enough that they had to deal with it. That's what Andrew needs to do here.

Perhaps if they were a different variety of brown and religious persuasion. Then they'd be extremist combatants instead of disenfranchised underprivileged minority youth.

If these gang members want to live life like this, can't we just round them up, stick them on an island somewhere and let them have at each other.

i was thinking the same thing! Round them up inside a stadium and give each of them a gun. problem solved.

Someone should tell these guys that handguns are illegal in NYC without a license. That should solve it.

Either that or make that "Tsk, tsk, tsk" sound with your teeth.

A young mother callously murdered while shielding her young son from danger, absolutely heartbreaking. What is also heartbreaking is that we can no longer take the verminous thugs that did this and strap them to the electric chair.
