Plaxico Burress Sentenced to 2 Years In Prison

092209-Free-Plaxico.jpg Former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress headed for Rikers Island earlier today after being sentenced to a two-year term for second-degree "attempted weapons possession." He had pleaded guilty to the charge after shooting himself in the thigh with his own illegal pistol in a Manhattan nightclub in November 2008. From Rikers Island he will be transferred to one of NY's many beautiful upstate prisons, just in time for foliage season and intramural convict football. ESPN.com noted that he was expected to serve about twenty months, followed by two years of probation, if his behavior is good.

Which it wasn't, for years in the NFL, until it came to this. He was a great wide receiver and of course will probably be back. He'll always be remembered in this city for ruining Bill Belichick's perfect season and making Eli Manning look like a decent quarterback. Of course there's a Free Plaxico site already (see pic), so don't worry, people will still make money off him.

I dislike Plaxico as much as the next guy, but this was a witch hunt from beginning to end.

Total HORSE SHIT.

Donte Stallworth killed a man and served less than a month in jail.

Bloomberg should not lobby for the enforcement of his own laws.

Donte Stallworth was given essentially the minimum sentence for what he was convicted of, as was Plaxico Burress.

Comparing the laws for different crimes in different states is pointless.

at least he didn't shoot any key body parts off, unlike some people

Plax who? Steve Smith and Mario Manningham did a pretty good job making Eli look good Sunday night against Dallass, with 20 catches for 281 yards and 2TDs between them.

wow, a rich guy who broke the law is actually going to jail. amazing.

if you're black it doesn't matter as much if you're rich

I think Ron Goldman's family would beg to differ.

this athlete should not have a concealed handgun in his possession. use some common sense, folks!!!! guns kill!!!

Maybe this will finally convince people to stop wearing sweatpants in public!

Bloomberg pushed hard to put another black man in prison, but he didn't say shit about Maddoff.

Maybe because enforcing New York City's laws directly involves the mayor. Bernie Madoff a.) broke Federal laws and b.) there was never any doubt Madoff would go to jail forever.

He should have fun at Rikers...with all the other guys who couldn't keep it in their pants.

Rikers is a city jail. Yeah, he'll be there briefly to begin the process, but his sentence will be served in a state prison.

NY has MANDATORY minimum sentencing for illegal gun possession. There's no way around it. (Remember the Rockefeller mandatory minimum sentences?) It has nothing to do with Plax's race, only his failure to register his gun properly and legally in this state.

There is a way around it: a lesser charge. If you're convicted of possessing a handgun there's no way around that minimum, but there's no legal requirement on prosecutors that they bring that charge. In Manhattan, though, nothing less is going to offered unless you have something pretty juicy to offer in exchange. And have a low enough profile that the press isn't going to be all over it pointing out our mayor's oft-stated anti-gun position.

Same thing happened with the Rockefeller drug laws. Not everyone who could be was charged with a violation carrying those heavy minimum sentences.

Gangbanger from new Jersey goes to Rikers. This is news?

jury nullification.

ridiculous fuckin laws. There has to be a reason for the law, and the punishment must be in proportion to the gravity of the law. What is the point of the law? The Rockefeller laws are BS too.

Bloomberg was 100% correct. It's not like he was this nice, normal guy who just made a mistake. He was a rich, spoiled, self centered, cocky out of control athlete, out bar hopping before a big game, carrying lots of cash and a loaded gun shoved down his sweatpants. His behaviour was getting worse and worse leading up to the incident. If it wasn't this it would have been something else. Hire a bodtguard or something. One more gun toting cowboy off the streets. Next?
