Only the Republicans Are Backing Paterson Now

The statements and actions of President Obama and Governor Paterson in the past few days have made it clear that the de facto Democratic Party leader has given the patriarchal blessing to Andrew Cuomo. Obama began his speech yesterday in Troy thus: "We have special guests here that I want to acknowledge. First of all, a wonderful man, the governor of the great state of New York, David Paterson. Next, your shy and retiring attorney general, Andrew Cuomo, is in the house. Andy is doing great work that has to be done."

Watch the video: the dutiful mention of the governor is followed by real warmth displayed to Cuomo. And in a business like politics where only competence and success count, being called a "wonderful man" is not a compliment. "Doing great work that has to be done," is what you want to hear.

So sure enough, the Republican Party jumped to the defense of the wounded and perhaps unelectable governor. The Times quoted former governor Pataki, considering a run himself: "I just think it's wrong.... The president should not be reading a poll and determining from that who should or should not run for governor in the state of New York." The Post is running an editorial today called, "Run, Dave, Run!" in which they plead on behalf of the public weal in their inimitable brainless staccato style: "Now the kingpins want to simply anoint Andrew Cuomo as New York's next gov? Don't let them do it, Dave. Stay in the race. Give New Yorkers options. It may wind up being the boldest move of your term. For you — and the state."

UPDATE: ABC's Jake Tapper reports that Obama expressed to Paterson his regret that the story leaked and caused such trouble. This is in character, and we're pretty damned sure Obama didn't want all this right before he was coming to New York for the UN meetings.

Well...Pataki's right. Party leader or not, Obama shouldn't meddle in the democratic process. Let the people vote this guy out.

Well...We never really voted him into the position in the first place. If Elliot Spitzer was still in Albany, that would be different.

I'd let the Repubs pick Paterson as Democratic nominee if we can run him against Michael Steele.

"inimitable brainless staccato style" is well put. That's a great phrase.

i was just thinking the same thing...!

One Cuomo was bad enough, though having said that, Andrew is probably better than his insufferably pious, more-liberal-than-thou father.

Not backing Paterson is racist!

Obama must be speaking through his white side. Maybe channeling his fancy school and college paying granny.

If a white president had tried to throw Patterson under the bus like this, the howls of "racism" would make your ears ring.

And how many of the 50 elected US governors are non-white?

Ladies and gentlemen:

As proof of the headline, allow me to present... "ides of march"! Let's give him a big hand of applause.

Dear. Mr. President,

Mind your own f'ing business.

Sincerely,
NY voters

Maybe I'm confused here, but honestly having Patterson in office is doing NY more of a disservice then Obama telling him not to run is. (AND Did we really use the "democratic" process to have Patterson in office in the first place - he wasn't voted in?) Besides his lack of approval ratings, his lack of control and use of checks and balances within his own state is proof enough that for the democratic party, him running again, would be to their disadvantage. It's a pure political card that Obama is playing, and he's doing it well. Showing his hand this early, shows that as a democrat he wants a strong AND united party. Obviously, Patterson is not a strong governor; he has no control over anyone. Obama probably wants someone who can stand their ground, which IS his business. This also means that a democrat has to stand up now to start running a successful campaign for the 2010 Election.

As far as the race card goes... ya'll wanna play that card you might as well just play the "he's blind" card. Surprised Obama hasn't caught flack for trying to "oust" a partially blind governor. Black, white, green, pink, blind, deaf, mute, gay, straight, promiscuous, prude, republican, democrat, independent, or any other thing for that matter doesn't have any pertinence being able to do your job SUCCESSFULLY is important. And as a New Yorker, I CARE about Albany not being filled with dumb-asses.
