MoCA Unveils New Facility on Centre Street

Today the Museum of Chinese in America welcomed Mayor Bloomberg to speak and participate in traditional Chinese eye-dotting ceremony as they unveiled their new facility, designed by Maya Lin. A little more on that eye-dotting: "According to Chinese custom, dabbing red ink onto the eye of a large, dancing dragon or lion brings the creature to life. It is a tradition for dignitaries to perform this ceremony at the launch of a new institution to signify that it has sprung into being." In other words, this is way cooler than a ribbon cutting.

The NY Times has more on the reopened museum; NY1 reports back saying "Galleries display paintings, photography, and mementos revealing stories from generations of immigrants and their families. The museum is designed to be interactive, with a range of multimedia experiences."

Another chinese tradition: emphasizing education heavily in children, but overemphasizing respect for elders and not giving equal weight to the development of leadership or conflict resolution skills, thus hobbling their children's opportunities to rise beyond middle management.

But I've already said to much...

Amen to that. (There's also some of that "don't rock the boat"/harmony-over-confrontation "virtue" that's as helpful as crap in a windstorm. At least, in my experience.)

@ Rock and John: there are reasons for the values: about 3 thousand years' worth of reasons. Learn about them and come to appreciate the values before you dismiss them. To explain to both of you why the values are as they are would take volumes. Harmony IS a virtue. I've seen innumerable instances of its application in my life.
Suffice it to say that in many ways, East and West are diametrically opposite. But I grew up biculturally. so, like it or not, I was forced to confront 2 different, and many times, opposing sets of values, thus giving me an opportunity to compare their relative pros and cons. You're giving the Chinese values short shrift.

You're speaking to me as if I am unfamiliar with these values and I am commenting as an outsider. I am not.

yeah and uh Asian girls don't date Asian guys because they feel like they're dating their father. ewww ew eww.

The only race who's women, on a wholesale scale, dismiss their own men in broad brush strokes as undesirable, to advance their socioeconomic status as arm candy for any other race's male.

While I'm sure it happens, one rarely sees it as a "norm" where black, white, or latin women say "eww" on a wholesale scale to men of their own race.

But to be fair: sometimes I can see why.

i remember watching some god-awful performance art there back in the 90s.
