Baby Lamb Saved from Bronx Slaughterhouse

babylambcute0909.jpg

Oh baby! Last night this cute little lamb was born on a transport truck on the way to a Bronx slaughterhouse. Luckily, a good samaritan and Farm Sanctuary swooped in and saved him, eventually bringing the little guy to their shelter in Watkins Glen, NY. Sadly, the mother didn't have such luck, and went to slaughter with the rest on board the truck.

"The minutes old lamb was discovered by a Good Samaritan who was shopping at an Italian market just a few doors down from the slaughterhouse when the truck arrived. Wanting to get a closer look at the sheep as they were unloaded, the woman walked over to the truck and was shocked to discover a newborn lamb among the herd, as well as a less fortunate lamb who had been trampled to death during transport.

When she brought the lamb to the truck driver’s attention, he grabbed him and handed him to her, explaining that one of the sheep must have given birth on the truck. When asked by the concerned citizen if it would be possible to reunite the struggling newborn with his mother, the driver told her there was no way to identify the lamb’s mother, as there were more than one hundred sheep on the truck."

The lamb was brought to her house in Yonkers, where it spent five days following around the humans like a puppy, until heading up to the Farm. This isn't the first animal to escape a city slaughterhouse; there was also Maxine, a cow found running through the streets of Queens in 2007; Joey, a goat found wandering through Brooklyn in 2007; and Queenie, a cow who escaped a slaughterhouse in Queens in 2000. We think this one should be named Frank Sinatra for those big blue eyes!

There are so few worthy comments on here that it makes me question the intelligence of the readers. A normal, compassionate reaction to this story wouldn't be to talk about how good the animal must taste or to dissect the grammar. A normal reaction would be that it was above kind for this woman to inconvenience her own life to save an animal. Or perhaps that the Farm Sanctuary is a pretty great place. Or even that the animal industry is completely bizarre and that better laws could be in place for these animals that deserve decent care and respect. By reacting with "comical" nonsense, it really just makes the world think that you are childish and immature. If you have something worthy to write about (even if it isn't in agreement) then we'd like to hear it. Otherwise, read the comics please.

    Frank Sinatra, huh?

I think the eyes just look blue because they're reflecting the flash.

there are whole nations which rural land is exclusively used to grow soy to feed animal for human consumption.

    Meat consumption is not sustainable.

Sustainability is the issue people should be discussing here.

You people disgust me!! All animals are babies, when they are born. And ALL animals matter, they ALL have a soul!!! What is wrong with this country, what is wrong with the entire world?? We as humans do not *NEED* to slaughter other animals to survive...we can live as vegetarians just fine, in fact it it HEALTHIER for us to not eat meat, which decomposes in our cells 2 x faster and speeds up our agging process.

I hope one day we as a planet will stop killing animals for food, if that doesn't happen, sadly, i pray that we as humans will be the ones slaughtered.

  • NannyState

Yes, they all have a soul and when they die they go to Smith and Wollensky.

  • mmelnick

Thank you for the only intelligent comment in this posting. Bravo.

Dost thou know who saved thee?

  • fuboy

Ah, thanks for the bit of Blake, although religious overtones don't go so far when there's a dead, trampled cousin a few feet away.

It's a holocaust before our eyes. And nobody gives a shit.

I would have worded it a little differently to say the least, but that's my general feeling. Wait, so another lamb gets trampled (not to mentioned the fact that a pregnant ewe was on the truck in the first place) and a hundred sheep are still headed to the slaughterhouse, but because this cute little thing gets "rescued" everything is well, warm and fuzzy with this situation? Nothing irritates me more than the sentiment that animal welfare matters more when a cute and charismatic animal is involved. Enough with kittens, puppies, baby seals and lambs! Or carry on so you can reinforce the popular perception that the people who claim they care about animal welfare only have the most juvenile and superficial concern with the issue.

  • Past Taliban

I wish some cows would trample Hussein Obama during transport.

  • The Man Bat

Real smart idiot...posting on a public message board your desire to harm the President of the United States....and with a name like "past taliban". You think Echelon isin't flagging your post at this very moment? Don't be surprised when the Secret Service comes knocking at your door later.

  • militza

perhaps if Clarice was carrying this little lamb she might've made it farther.

  • solidago

Can you create "Walt Disney Taught Me Everything I Need to Know About Animals" and "Laughably Naive and Superficial Level of Concern for Animal Welfare" tags so I can keep track of these posts? Thanks.

  • Rocknrope

    Is the samaritan's name Clarice?

  • NannyState

It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again...

  • Mr. Shankly

    [fetches fava beans and Chianti]

  • Snoopy

No I don't believe so. But his mother was named Mary if it helps the storyline.

  • felixthecat2

    Wow, touching story.

  • callo282

I will never eat lamb again!

  • Kojak

I'm glad they saved this little lamb. Cute baby lambs shouldn't be slaughtered until they are adults and are less cute. Then we won't feel so guilty eating them.

  • ProcedureTurn

I agree. Lamb is quite delicious!!! I love the food cartswhich serve lamb. I once had a job where I wouldwalk many blocks to find a cart which served BBQ'd lamb. yummmm... but now I worry for moms life. I know she was nto saved and that she will most likely be turned into calrioesfor some New yorker. sad. But alas, we need our calories to make money and be alive!!!

  • sj

    Aren't all lambs baby lambs?

  • pudeljung

Indeed. All lambs are indeed baby lambs.

    Curious.

  • TheKlaus

I think 'Baby' was thrown in there to dramatize the fact that the thing had basically just been born.

You wordage sticklers are more annoying than a twitching eye-lid.

  • ProcedureTurn

the people who post these articles must have community college educations or just very inept. perhapsthey are H.S. interns which is more likely. I get used to the poor grammar on Gothamist.

  • barryap

I count four grammatical errors in your comment. You may not have a better mastery of the English language than the site's editors, but your irony skills are undeniable.

  • ProcedureTurn

mom may end up in a food cart spinning vertically. I will avoid food carts for the next few weeks. please do the same.

  • TheKlaus

Oh man, that is too cute. I needed that
