Vegas, baby? The Age of Stupid

Post-apocalyptic docu-drama The Age of Stupid stars Pete Postlethwaite as a global archivist living in 2055, flipping through the pivotal news stories from 2004 - 2008 on a Minority Report-type screen, wondering why we didn’t stop global warming when we had a chance. Well, maybe we would have had time if HBO didn't produce so much time-consuming must-see TV.

It premieres tonight at 700 locations in over 50 countries simultaneously, coinciding with Climate Week NYC. Supposedly, this will set a new Guinness World Record for the largest single screen shared audience experience ever. Here in New York, it's screening at several cinemas, and the premiere gala takes place down at the World Financial Center, in a solar-powered tent. We're told that guests, who include former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, will arrive via boats, bikes and solar cars.

A bicycle-powered performance by Moby will be broadcast before the screening, followed by an acoustic set from Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. The Radiohead frontman was spotted in LA last week, but it's unclear whether he's now here in town for the gig or will be performing via satellite. Watch the trailer below, and the Times has a lengthy interview with filmmaker Franny Armstrong, a Briton best known for McLibel, her documentary on a seven-year court battle between McDonald’s and two vegetarian anti-meat, anti-corporate campaigners.

    >Fact is the earth has been cooling since 1998

Ah, the old, long disproven cooling since-1998 myth. Don't let

facts get in the way of your beliefs there!

If you're too lazy to dig up the data yourself, you might want to watch this...

Remember that teenager who was rwtiting a blog about how climate change was a fallacy, and who actually got some mainstream media to pay attention to her, even though she was, you know, a teen with no background in science or climatology and basically just regurgitated what she read on the internet?

    Whatever happened to her?

  • BlueFairlane

    She became governor of Alaska.

There are many respected scientists who disagree with politician, non-scientist Al Gore's opinions on global warming, they just don't get the media coverage the alarmists do. Fact is the earth has been cooling since 1998; fact is the earth climate has ALWAYS been changing, long before human beings started driving SUV's and republicans became the source of all evil on earth.

Ask about who these "many respected scientists" are and the denialists can never give a name. I hear that "many respected scientists" believe in ghosts. That must mean ghosts exist.

is the cooler earth easier on your knuckles? have you noticed?

yes, the earth temp has always changed; the trendline is still irrefutably moving upward despite a temporary drop. there's a difference between a natural change in the earth's temp and one caused by man; the science is pretty unambiguous in terms of what's driving the recent changes (or is pollution a hoax, like evolution? has kansas weighed in?).

she moved on to carve a backwards "B" on her cheek. she misses the attention.

Like any other religion or cult, the Global Warming/cooling/Climate change fanatics have their own apocalyptic doomsday scenario. Everybody's trying to be greener than thou.

  • Qraymond

Much like these nuts who believe in gravity and evolution.

  • Spirit of 76

Don't forget the "round Earth" lunatics. Why, the Church said it's flat, and the Church knows everything because they have the word of God on their side, right? Everybody knows Columbus just sailed in a circle, not around some mythical globe.

  • Qraymond

Yes, very similar to these wackos who believe in the insane theories of evolution and gravity.

These people will stop at nothing to advance their radical, science-based agenda.

  • Noreaster76

I couldn't have said it better myself!
