Yalies Have the Best Pizza in the World

pizzanyc0909.jpg A new list picking 50 foods and naming the best spots in the world for them finds that various locales around the five boroughs have the top burgers, ravioli, pork belly and pastrami sandwiches (at Katz's, natch). But if you're looking for the best slice, you're in the wrong town.

As we've already mentioned, Frank Pepe Pizzeria in New Haven has the world's best slice, and this latest list of top spots is just one more to confirm it. But it's okay guys, we still have our bagels.

Perhaps a winner within the five boroughs should be declared, however, once and for all! If you ask Counting Crows' Adam Duritz he'll tell you Joe's Pizza is the best (the Yelpers give it 4 out of 5 stars); do you dare challenge the dreaded one?

"YALIES HAVE THE BEST PIZZA IN THE WORLD"
They Deserve it.

Indeed. Nowhere better in the world. Not in Italy, not in New York.

Pizza oven on Vine St in Lockport, NY, has the best pizza in the world.

when will everybody learn that pizza is subjective, dammit.

but seriously queens has the best pizza.

Is that a Dani's or Amore's fan speaking?

ok, the best pizza may be subjective, but i know for damn-sure queens isn't the best for anything.

Then you don't know jack.

Anyway, back to pizza.. I don't know about a regular slice, but I do know Queens has the best grandma pies ever.

Yes, some of the New Haven pizza places are better than anything in NYC. Sally's is probably better than Frank Pepe and neither of them serve by the slice as I recall.

Not this again!
Everybody knows that New Haven has the best pizza, but it's at MODERN, not Frank Pepe's.

STATE STREET 4 EVA!

The national chains always had a tough time in NY, NJ and Ct. The local product was always much better.

Maybe five years ago, but not since the hip kids read about it in TONY and the Voice and started flooding it. Old man DiFara used to put a lot of care and love into his pies, but demand has gone through the roof, and it seems hard for him to keep up.

the old man still makes hands down the best pizza in this city, and i've had lombardi's (2nd place), grimaldi's, patsy's, joes, everything pretty much.

Oh please, they cannot even spell the word 'pizza' properly in New Haven.

'Apizza' -- oh, really?

Seriously, New Haven pizza is pretty decent. But no one with any credibility has ever asserted that Manhattan has great pizza, especially since most of the original Italian proprietors have long since decamped to Long Island, New Jersey (or in the case of some of the real old-timers, Florida, Arizona, or the cemetery).

Staten Island has some wonderful pizza. I believe that Denino's and Joe and Pat's (both on the North Shore) are well worth a visit from anyone appreciative of quality pizza.

I don't know about out of town pizza, but the best here in New York was here down in Hudson Square at Nino's on Spring street. A nice hot slab with pepperoni with the grease running down your forearm to your elbow into a napkin on the counter. Now that's pure New York street pizza.

None of this article makes sense to me. Do the British really know good cuisine when they taste it? New York is the best place for a burger? Maybe. Perhaps our friends in Chicago, St. Louis or Denver might have a few suggestions for Mr. Fox. And LA home of the best milk-shake IN THE WORLD? Really?

On the Pizza front, I've been to both Pepe's and Modern. Love the tradition and the support those businesses get in New Haven.

But really... the best pizza in the world? I don't think so. Has Mr. Fox ever been to Naples, Italy?

My Italian American friends (the objective ones at least) agree - by our standards - the pizza in the big three - New York, Boston and Philly - all about the same - and its what people miss most when they move away from this area. Returning to sample the pies in New Haven. I'd say they're upholding a tradition. It's a great experience - but their pies are not best in the world by a long shot.

I have eaten at both Sally's and Frank Pepe. Both are delicious and good places to stop on a trip to/from the Cape/New England. That being said... both are PAINFULLY slow. Also, it takes a REALLY LONG time to be seated and then an EVEN LONGER time to get served. Finally, I want to add that they are really slow.

no, they don't serve slices. yes they are really slow. and YES, PEPE'S IS THE ORIGINAL AND THE BEST. they've been making tomato pies since the early 1920s. my mom was a friend of Frank Pepe in the 30s. i had my 10th birthday party there in the 60s, and it's a treat to be able to go and have an apizza baked in the same brick ovens that have been used for 80s years. IT IS WORTH THE WAIT. and NO, Sally's is very good but it's not as good as Pepe's. of course, this is a battle in new haven that will never end. but it's a tasty battle. i heartily suggest a trip to new haven for Pepe's Pizza. bring comfortable shoes for the wait.

and by the way, you really can't beat Louie's Luncheonette in New Haven for burgers. they're right up there with the earliest claims to hamburger sandwiches, i believe going back to 1906. they're still in the same tiny brick building, they're still made in the same iron vertical grillers and you still can't get ketchup there. they're just awesome.

You are letting this thread gas you up.
Nothing in CT beats White Manna in Hackensack, NJ.

As far as burgers that is......................

Forget those snobs

Yankee Doodle 4 Life!!!

RIP!

The Best Pizza In The World is the one in your mouth right now.

This is like declaring who the best person in the world is. Of course it depends on your taste. New Haven pizza tends to be burnt. And crispy. If that's what you like, it's worth a visit. If you don't - say you like your cheese white rather than brown-orange - then you probably won't like New Haven pizza. Save yourself thirty bucks in Metro-North fares.

Everyone knows the best pizza in the world is the $90 plain cheese pie at the new Cowboys Stadium.

Frank Pepe and Modern. And I grew up in NY so I know what pizza is. Suck it, Di Fara!

there are no such things as "best" anythings, but the white clam pie from frank pepe is pretty amazing.

New Haven pizza has been exported to chicago for some reason and I can attest it is absolutely fantastic.

Note to Gothamist: Yalies don't "Have" frank pepe's pizza because they aren't able to leave campus and cross the grand avenue bridge without their mommies holding their hands. They have no idea Frank Pepe's is even there.

the clam pie at frank pepe was too salty. good but too salty. otherwise, i've had pizza like that in ny and some place called italy.

New Haven pizza is damn good. The best? I don't know, pizza is subjective, of course. Who's to say that Pepe's is "better" than Di Fara or vice versa?

i went to frank pepes, and it was good, but the best pizza in new haven is at Bar.

Ewwww, has that guy actually eaten at Joe's? It's the worst (I lived in the apartment above it for a year)! Their sauce is tomato paste from a can and its way over priced. Don't waste your money.

Within the next year, the only guy in NYC that's going to have any credibility or authority on opining on the best slice in NYC is going to be the guy who's eating slices all over NYC and will amass empirical evidence to support his claim. Even though it will be valid for his taste buds only, at least he gives you the reasons for why he likes or dislikes a place.

Sensory overload will make that guy just take a bite and chuck away the rest.
Don't take him too seriously.
However, any recommendations after one hundred different places could be worth the trip.

new haven is much too far to travel for pizza. I have a papa johns a few blocks away and they even have more selctions than some pizzaria in new haven. i wodner how puch pepe paid to have his pizza parlor named the "best." yeah right. Uno pizza is grea too. Therss one not far away, but i would need a car to driveto it or take a very long subway route which isnt worth it. anyway, papa johns pizza is good enough!!!
