NY1 talked to witnesses at the scene of the crash, 60th Street and 5th Avenue, one saying of the cab driver, "he was coming very, very fast." The same witness also noted that after hearing a loud thump, "I saw a horse going over toward Fifth Avenue, loose" before the carriage drivers could stop it.
While the cab and carriage drivers both have minor injuries, the horse, Blackie, was not injured and is now resting at Clinton Park Stables. Stephen Malone of the Horse and Carriage Association told the network, "The horse got a little startled, to be honest with you, for such a large bang, the horse didn't overreact in any shape or form and he was corralled within four, five seconds of it happening." While animal rights activists are using the incident to point out again that the streets aren't safe for horses, Malone says they're working with the city to make them safer.

I was at 60th and 5th when it happened, and the horse was not even spooked. He jogged free for about 20 feet before another carriage driver and bystander caught his reins. He didn't look like he would have run too far on his own, but it could have been initial shock.
A bystander held another carriage driver's reins while he went to help out at the scene. That guy came back pretty rattled, almost vomiting. I was shocked when I heard that no-one had life threatening injuries. It looked pretty bad and the crash was horrific.
The horse was probably too tired and miserable to care. Old glue factory nags don't bolt.
If the horse ran for two blocks, he did spook. Horses run when frightened because they are prey animals, and that's their instinct. It's one of the ~many~ reasons why they have no business being on the streets of NYC. Absolutely ~anything~ can frighten a horse. In this case, the cab crashed into the carriage first, but the point remains that chaotic, congested streets are no place for a horse, and create a real safety hazard.
It's a minor miracle nobody was killed or maimed in this accident. Also, consider the danger of a 1500 pound animal running wild--a child, pedestrian or biker could have easily been trampled. In fact, a couple years ago an elderly bike-rider in Central Park was knocked down by a runaway carriage horse--another minor miracle that he wasn't killed. What is it going to take for Bloomberg to realize that horse & buggies need to be taken off the streets of NYC for good!? New Yorkers need to make their voices heard-contact your Council Member & Bloomberg and tell them you support a BAN on horse-drawn carriages. These horses deserve better than a life of exploitation and cruelty, and in doing so, we create a safer city for all.
Edita, get a life you sick, lonely girl. The number one horse exploiter and abuser in NYC is you, sicko. Carrying around pictures of dead horses year after year is disgusting. And so are you. Take a shower. Find a boyfriend who will tolerate your BS and cheap clothes. And for God sake, get a life. (ps, the horses hate you...and they know an angry, hostile person...so stay the heck away from them horse hater).
This dirty nasty carriage driver sounds angry and hostile. Major failure. Here is video of the after scenes of the accident.

In fact, a bill to BAN horse-drawn carriages and place the horses into sanctuaries already exists. Council Member Tony Avella's Intro 658-A. Please spread the word and contact your local politicians. This bill needs to be enacted before a real tragedy occurs. Not only would we end the exploitation and suffering of the horses, we would make our city safer for all.
Horse carriages are inhumane, dangerous, and generally disgusting.
I see the humaniacs are out en force!
These vile ghouls check their email and Google alerts everyday, breathlessly awaiting and HOPING for an accident so they can roar into their sick actions, with telephone daisy chains and text messages to their pals awaiting the literal red meat of carnage. Sick, foul fools, drooling over the idea of an injured horse to rally around, to fill a black void in their troubled and pathetic souls.
Too dramatic? I think not. Repeated catcalls to drivers to 'die of cancer', telling a pregnant driver her baby should be 'dead or at least deformed', posting that they hope the driver is dead.
I can't say enough bad about them.
And where is your proof? Do you have a video like the so-called "humaniacs?" I doubt it.
I am frequently in that area around Central Park (although I have never participated in any of the anti-carriage demonstrations) but have never seen any of the behavior that is causing you to hyperventilate. However, I have seen horses on hot days standing in the sun with little water. Seemingly oblivious to the horses condition, the drivers stand around looking for the next tourist they can overcharge.
To Just Saying: Of course, I suppose I am just making all of this up, right? I spent 16 years on 59th Street, I have been threatened, spit at, harassed, and followed by humaniacs. Because you haven't seen it, it doesn't exist? My, my, you are self-important.
As far as horses standing around in the heat with little water - be specific. What's a "little water" to you? Our horses have free access to running water troughs at the beginning and end of EACH ride, the troughs are just inside the park at 6th Ave, and just inside the park at 60th & 5th - or haven't you seen them on your many "frequent" visits? Most drivers carry a bucket of water under the carriage as well, just in case. And here's a newsflash: horses who are deprived of water will sicken and DIE, even faster than other mammals because of their unusual physicality. We have NEVER had a horse sent in for dehydration, nor have we ever had a horse die on the street from lack of water. Your argument is ridiculous.
And oh yeah, I do have a video of the ARs screaming at people. Here it is, from WPIX Channel 11, just for you: http://petablows.homestead.com/Videos.html
If they talk like that to the customers, you can imagine what they say to US.
Felix - 'angry and hostile'? YOU'RE DAMNED STRAIGHT.
Anybody that ISN'T 'angry and hostile'after being threatened, maligned, vilified, lied about, and spit at for YEARS would definitely not be normal.
Remember - YOu come looking for us, not the other way around.

The entries above from "DannoNYC" and "smashpragandna" are typical of the kind of hostile, aggressive verbal abuse activists put up with from the carriage drivers, both in person and on the internet. These men routinely verbally abuse those who care about the horses with racist and sexist nonsense when we hold peaceful rallies or press conferences--and we have video proof of this. The more they reveal of their abusive personalities, the more frightening it is to realize that they have contact with ~any~ animals.
Say what you will, DannoNYC,and whoever, my issue is not with you, it's with getting the horses off the streets.
Anyone who really cared about their horse, as these drivers claim to, would never put them in the incredibly dangerous and hostile environment of the NYC streets, and stick them in tiny cells with no turnout at the end of the day (horses need DAILY turnout), lack of water, shade, and the list goes on, some of which was documented by the 2007 Comptroller's Audit of the carriage industry, which anyone can look up). This is a life of misery for a horse, and anyone not making a paycheck off this misery can admit that.
I've had carriage drivers from other cities tell me this--that they would NEVER force a horse to work in the NYC streets. It would be unthinkable. Equine vets not paid by the industry say that there is no possible way to have a humane, safe existence for carriage horses in NYC.
And those pictures of dead horses you speak of? Those are actual horses that died on the streets of NYC, forced to make a living for people like you, until they dropped dead of a horrific accident or ailment caused or worsened in the industry. What happens to all the horses that get too old and worn out, or injured and are unable to pull your carriages? Those horses get sold to the highest bidder at the kill auctions, and are often sold to the slaughterhouse. This is the disgusting cycle of exploitation and death that we are trying to end. We bring the truth to tourists and New Yorkers by showing the ugly reality of the horse-drawn carriage industry to the public.
The pending legislation to ban the industry includes a section on job-retraining for the current carriage drivers. We don't want anyone to be out of work, we just don't want horses to suffer so that they can make a profit. There is not place for 19th century horse & buggies in the chaotic environs of 21st century NYC.
Please help us end this cycle of violence by supporting Intro 658-A, Tony Avella's bill to BAN horse-drawn carriages in NYC.

Edita - you and your ghoul friends are just upset that there was no dead or injured horse this time around, so you could add pics to your collection of horse abuse porn.
Hunter College did a psychological profile of 'animal rights activists' in the early 90s. The findings showed that most ARs had traumatic childhoods, leaving them with feelings of alienation, victimization, and various social disorders. They found that the subjects PROJECTED their feelings onto animals, transferring their own helplessness and pity to the animal. Sound familiar? Contrast that with a normal person who is concerned with "animal welfare", not "animal rights" - no hysteria, no vile lies, no fascination with death.
Out of all the ARs I have met (yes, we have met, you just don't know who i am), I have to say that you are one of the least intelligent, so I hope all of this isn't over your head. Maybe Elizabeth can explain it to you.
