NY State the Latest to Run From ACORN Storm

2009_09_patersonruns.jpg The only thing falling faster than the acorns on the trees these days is government funding for the embattled community organizing group of the same name. After lopsided votes in both the Senate and the House earlier in the week to cut off federal money from ACORN, yesterday Governor Paterson ordered state agencies not to move forward on contracts with the group.

The move from Paterson comes after state Republicans have been railing ACORN after the brouhaha that came about after a right-wing filmmaker came forward with an undercover video where he posed as a pimp and used the agency for assistance in getting tax breaks. The incident is currently under investigation by the Brooklyn DA's office and being monitored by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

The head of ACORN for the state, Pat Boone, said that he has no problem with Paterson's move, but feels that the organization will be vindicated. Boone released an "Ain't That a Shame" statement saying, "ACORN condemns the behavior depicted on these videotapes and is committed to taking every necessary step to regain the public trust...We welcome the governor’s review and are confident he will find that every state dollar we’ve received went directly to combating New York’s foreclosure crisis."

Uhm, ACORN is one of the reasons for the foreclosure crisis. These things tend to happen when you pressure banks into giving mortgages to people based on their skin color rather than their ability to pay back the loan.

Yup,

You're sooo right. No wait, you're utterly full of shit. ACORN was one of the groups combating the predatory lending practices, whereas the Banks wanted to continue them, b/c they were profitable. CRA (Community Reinvestment Act) Loans were highly profitable.

You're just an idiot. Yup, it's the poorest who somehow toppled the economy, instead of the most powerful.

But right, let's just believe that poor minorities were somehow responsible for this malaise.

I'd like to see how exactly ACORN "pressure[d] banks into giving mortgages based on their skin color." Please, how do this happen. You get a bunch of thuggish looking guys to stand outside Citi?!?

It was the poor people that started the economic melt down. That is a well known fact. They sought after loans for homes they couldn't afford, then took out second mortgages to buy plastic patio furniture.
Personal responsibility is hard to come by these days and now the rest of us have to suffer.

Nice try. Keep repeating it.. "the economy is in the sh*tter because those liberals pressured those banks to give mortgages to the coloreds."

You think that's what caused Bear Stearns and Lehman to collapse? Why the government needed to bail out AIG?

First - those banks were only too happy to write a mortgage to anyone who had a pulse. Why? The mortgages were quickly resold and securitized, so they had none of the risk on their books. They made money in every step of the process.

Second, the securities were then used as leverage by companies like Lehman and Bear, at a ratio north of twenty-to-one.

Peddle your sh*t at a Tea Party.
