Little Ducks Taunted By Little Kids in Brooklyn

babyduckcute.jpg The folks at the Farm Sanctuary tell us three young ducks were just saved from some bullies in Boro Park, Brooklyn (where they were "mercilessly being taunted and abused of a group of children"). They report back from the scene:

A crowd of people standing in the middle of a wet Brooklyn street in was what initially caught the attention of Rina Deych, a registered nurse and member of the New York Bird Club. As they got closer to the crowd, Deych could make out the source of the commotion: three ducks lying helpless on the pavement as children taunted and tormented them. Deych immediately stopped the car, jumped out and lifted the stressed birds to safety. After gently placing them in her car, she drove the hungry baby ducks to her home, where they enjoyed a sumptuous feast while they awaited transport to Farm Sanctuary.

“The fact that a group of children’s response to injured and frightened animals was to taunt and stomp them is indicative of a dire need for humane education in the classroom and at home,” said Susie Coston, Farm Sanctuary’s national shelter director.

Thank goodness for good Samaritans! The sanctuary thinks the ducks survived a "probable fall from a transport truck en route to a live market." And one suffers from "an eye trauma so severe he will most likely never regain sight in the eye."

The author of this item does not understand the meaning of the word "taunt."

Rina Deych took an opportunity to be proactive and set an example instead of standing there idly. We need more people like her to set an example. Kids learn from parents; sounds like these kids had poor role models. Thank you, Rina Deych. Hope the ducks are living the good life.

why the torture of defenseless animals?

There is something beyond wrong when people allow, participate and enjoy the suffering of others: evil comes into mind. "Good" kids can be put in such situations by the deranged.

Simple minds are the worse danger for civilization.

People have written to ask how the ducks are doing.

They doing very well at Farm Sanctuary.

You can see the "after" pictures of the ducks here:

Most people think of themselves as kind and compassionate. Yet, ducks wouldn't be falling off trucks and goats wouldn't be found running along highways, escaping from slaughterhouses, if there wasn't a demand for their flesh.

Switching to a plant-based diet is better for human health, the planet, and, obviously, the animals.

By the same token some kids grow to understand the ethics of a sociopath, moreover if they have the brain of one, or is guided by one.

'Duckling' on duckling violence? Take it to Park Slope.

  • Aristocrat

    What race were the children?

  • Bouncing Soul

I'm sure at least one of those kids will grow up to be a criminal if not a serial killer. Animal abuse and feeling no remorse has always been involved in the makings of serial killers.

some kids need a good smack to the back of the head and if that doesnt work break back the ruler and if that doesn't work just give them the needle.

  • dadoc

So kids have an innate drive to kill? Wow, your sense of the world is totally damaged. Kids kill helpless animals through instinct, all men are batterers and rapists, etc? WTF is safe for you? Kids like baby animals. Yes, they need supervision, as their affection overwhelms the skills they have not yet acquired, but the innate nature of the child is good. Sorry for your experiences as a child. There is help.

That little pair is cute as f*ck....

  • Amanda Harletsch

never let a kid (even less a group) alone with a small creature: humans with no developed sense of values will kill with no remorse.

  • solidago

I'm with you that you shouldn't let small kids near animals unsupervised - they are very likely to injure and maybe even kill the animal - but I don't think it is because they are naturally born sociopaths. It takes a while for them to develop the sense of respect and consequences that make us what we are, and they often simply don't realize that their "loving" can injure or even kill the animal. They aren't making some sort of evil value judgement - they just aren't equipped yet to make those judgements. Ides, you wouldn't call a cat a sociopath for playing with a mouse that it maimed just enough so it couldn't get away, would you?

  • Amanda Harletsch

naturally born sociopaths? mmmmmm, I never said that or even implied it. Ethics and self awareness is something we develop, grow, refine. Kids are not aware of their strength or understand how their actions have irreversible consequences, that's it. Therefore they will overpower and kill any smaller creature with no real understanding of what is in progress.

Some adults will never even have a decent understanding of ethics, tehrefore the success of religion and overpopulation.

  • ides_of_march

There is much truth to that statement I'm sad to say.

Anyway these kids are all obviously sociopaths.

And would suggest that Carlson start interviewing at the nearest TGIFs, as there is a repeated indication of the total abscence of journalistic abilities.

  • dadoc

And just read the link (not that it was really necessary). Farm ducks that probably fell off a truck.

Implication from Gothamist's presentation: vicious Brooklyn kids stomp ducklings. Fail in reading, interpretation and reporting. Trolling for hits: B+.

  • dadoc

Once again, a one-sided blog, quite biased in reporting. Nothing to indicate the kids were the source of the "stomping". And how the heck do kids "taunt" baby ducks? Give me video or STFU. Most kids reaction to ducklings is fascination and adoration. What, they didn't throw themselves in front of traffic, create a protective cordon, text PETA to come to the rescue? Tough tatas. There's a reason animals produce multiple offspring, and that's because some don't survive. Bogus story, bogus blog, bogus reporting. Wish the ducklings well. Ducks are way cool.

  • Rina Deych

    Hi dadoc,

I was the person who rescued the ducks. When we (my son and I) arrived on the scene, the kids (and adults) were surrounding the ducks, who were in the middle of the street. The kids were stomping and yelling and waving their hands to scare and torment the ducks. There were crates lying nearby, and their backs had feathers rubbed off (to indicate they were packed tightly in the crates). I have been in animal rescue and advocacy for most of my life, so I have some experience in evaluating animals. Also, since I'm a registered nurse (for the past 30 years), I'm good at examining.

To the person who asked what race the kids were ... what does it matter? Kids are kids. No one is all good or all bad. We are all conglomerations of lots of stuff.

I became a nurse because I can't stand to see anyone suffer without doing something to help ... this applies to all species.

You're a real find. I bet you're the classy type who only taunts or tortures animals your own size. Congrats.
