NTSB: Hudson Crash's Small Pilot Heard Wrong Frequency

2009_08_hud51.jpg More on August's tragic small plane-tour helicopter crash over the Hudson: National Transportation Safety Board says that the small plane pilot "read back the wrong radio frequency to an air traffic controller but wasn't corrected." The pilot was never corrected and never got Newark Liberty Airport's right frequency; a minute later, his plane crashed with the helicopter. The NY Times points out, "The Teterboro controller did not catch the discrepancy in the readback. At the time, the controller, alone in the tower, was in the midst of a personal phone call, and in addition, there was other voice traffic on the radio frequency at that point." The plane's three occupants were all killed, as were the chopper's six.

This all boils down to a freak accident. Let's stop playing the blame game and live our lives.

Clearly, it was not a freak accident, "buttface." Interesting choice of name for yourself though. I wonder if this controller is going to be fired. I should hope so anyway. Accepting the job of air traffic controller means accepting responsibility for the lives of others. This person didn't take that seriously enough, and thusly people are dead. To me, that's deserved blame, and a big problem.

It is still the pilot's ultimate responsibility to watch where he's going.

Whoa, whoa, WHOA. imnotbenjamin, do you have any idea what you're talking about? longacre is right: flying the airplane is the pilot's responsibility, and that includes knowing his or her surroundings and watching out for other aircraft when flying VFR (which is what one does when flying at low altitudes over the Hudson). ATC makes no guarantee that they will be able to maintain aircraft separation. They're an aid, not a guarantee.

I don't think it's fair to blame the size of the pilot for this tragedy.

Small pilots are people too! A little respect, please.

First I thought it said that the small pilot heard wrong frequently. That's cuz I read wrong frequently.

I'mma let you finish,
Captain Sully had the best crash story of 2009.
