The Marijuana Policy Project [MPP] has produced two new TV ads for media markets in key New York Senate districts. The commercials feature patients who have benefited from medical marijuana, but you won't see them here in NYC, because uptight Eisenhower-era local affiliates of ABC, CBS and Fox have declined to broadcast them. Because reefer drives people into homicidal rages, or something! However, one local network, WNBC, has bravely accepted the group's money and is showing the spots, which includes testimonials from radical freaks like Conservative Party member Joel Peacock of Buffalo, who suffers from chronic pain as the result of an accident. In the ad, he says, "It took away the pain. It took away the nausea. I didn't have stomach cramps. I slept. It just did everything my medicine doesn't do. Please, ask your senator to have compassion." Whatever, hippie! In 2007, the state assembly passed a bill to legalize marijuana for medical purposes, but it never made it through the Senate. Thanks! No idea why I couldn't find those earlier.
At the chance of being flamed, I have a few questions:
* Under what circumstances would it be legalized?
* What controls would be in place?
That is, Smoking Marijuana affects everyone in the vicinity, so it is somewhat different from having a beer and, IMO, just can't be legalized without any control. Also, an honest study needs to be done without fear of prosecution.
Even if it is not legalized, the penalties need to be adjusted, to say the least.
point is many, many people are already smoking herb. the laws need to be altered so that honest citizens are not made to be criminals.
and also so that we are not wasting precious resources investigating and prosecuting marijuana offenses. prohibition helps no one but law enforcement's budget.
Well, that addresses "the penalties need to be adjusted", what about the rest?
what rest? legalize, as in the laws allow you to partake, and it is up to your own discretion to where/when you do it. ie. cigarettes.
Yeeeeaaahhhh, You see there is a slight problem: Cigarette smoke won't intoxicate everyone in the area...
Second hand cigarette smoke gives other people cancer.
Oh, and I don't know if you have been in the vicinity of pot smoking before, but it is very unlikely someone will get high if they are not directly toking the ganja.
Rrrriiiiggghhhhtt...
No one ever got a buzz from 2nd hand pot smoke..
Uh-Huh.
Big Pharma doesn't like competition.
When I have a cough, nothing suppresses it like a good high. I'm sure the smoke itself isn't great for the throat, but I cease coughing immediately after smoking.
Kanye West hates white people.

There's no reason at all why mariuana has to be smoked. One can functionally extend its half-life by consuming it orally, which especially make more sense for someone who,
e.g., needs pain relief 24/7.
If it was legal, potency could be tested and controlled, and thus the dosage via oral consumption could also be controlled. Right now, the only real reason for smoking it are its quick absorption and faster elimination, both which let people adjust their dosage on the fly.
"There's no reason at all why mariuana has to be smoked."
Fair enough. Do you know if there is any provision under US law to allow honest research? There should be.
There isn't much of a chance for research since its classified as a Schedule 1 substance. Schedule 1 means the DEA feels there's no medical use for the substance so its highly unlikely you'd be able to get any funding for research.
Like many other things this has nothing to do with science and everything to do with no one being able to even vaguely suggest we should move it down to Schedule 2 (where it can hang out with cocaine) without being labeled as "soft on crime/drugs".
while i applaud their message, why just medical marijuana? quit pussy-footing around and legalize it outright.
MMP is the sound my cat makes a few times right before he throws up a hairball
shocking considering how liberal we are here in the city
I've seen that movie "Reefer Madness." and it clearly shows what happens when decent people start smoking that stuff.
It clearly shows that the people at Woodstock must not have been smoking pot. Otherwise, there would have been dozens of murders and thousands of reports of mental illness.
