Queens Terror Raids: Worries Of Madrid-Style Attack, FBI-NYPD Fighting

After raiding three homes in Flushing, Queens early Monday morning, the FBI is apparently set for more! The Daily News provides the tip-off: "Fearful of a Madrid-style subway train bombing, authorities are poised to make more raids to seize bomb-making materials at locations in Queens, sources said Wednesday... Another source said an earlier raid uncovered nine backpacks and cell phones, raising memories of the March 2004 bombings in Madrid."

A Post source says, "They were going to blow up several places simultaneously and take out as many people as possible -- a large number of people." However, the authorities did not recover any explosives. The FBI had been monitoring a former Queens resident who now lives in Denver, Najibullah Zazi, and apparently became alarmed when he rented a car to drive from Denver to Queens. Zazi claims he's innocent and that he just came to NYC to deal with an issue he had with his coffee cart that he used to operate in Lower Manhattan. From the NY Times:

Mr. Zazi said he was stopped at the George Washington Bridge by the authorities, who briefly detained him and searched his car. A city official confirmed that officers stopped a man at the bridge and searched his car, and that “everything was clean.” The official could not say what prompted the stop.

Mr. Zazi said he thought the police might be profiling him or suspected him because he has a beard and had rented the car. The next day, he said he thought his car had been stolen, but the police told him it had been towed. The following day, he said, he noticed he was being followed and called the police twice to complain.

Finally, he said, he cut short his stay in New York, deciding to fly back to Colorado on Saturday.

“It was too much for me,” Mr. Zazi said. “I said, ‘I can’t stay here, even for a minute.’ "

However, sources claim that Zazi left town when he figured out there was heightened surveillance; they also say he trained with Al Qaeda in Pakistan (Zazi's relative confirms he traveled for Pakistan for five months—to see his wife). There are also reports suggesting that the FBI is upset at the NYPD—the feds wanted to delay the investigation whereas the NYPD wanted to act quickly.

Today, the FBI and NYPD say there's no immediate threat to NYC; Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, "We're the best protected city in world. There are no guarantees, as we live in a dangerous world. Certainly [the terrorist attacks on] 9/11 showed that to us, and we can see developments throughout the world that underscore that. But we are doing more than anyplace else and we'll continue to do that."

Thanks for helping the bad guys, Daily News.

Those folks in the Fear Industry want to keep their jobs.

This whole thing makes no sense. All these people were under close surveillance and wire-taps, but when they went in they found NOTHING and arrested NO-ONE?? And the prime "terrorist" flew back home without a problem?
This sounds like a totally bungled investigation or something which was entirely bogus from the start, and it sounds like everyone is trying to cover their asses now....

Spell check & edit before posting next time please.

"...an earlier raid uncovered nine backpacks and cell phones"... "However, the authorities did not recover any explosives."

So basically they got nothing...?

In 1998, three years before 9-11 the NYPD stopped a suicide bombing attack on the subway by 2 palestinians in Brooklyn. The bombs were all made and ready to go. They got there just in time and saved a lot of innocent lives.

That one was only interrupted because one of the guys got scared and ratted out his friends. We might not always be so lucky.

As I said in the previous article before this, this year is very similar to that of 2001.

It would not surprised me if another attack happens.

This whole things sounds like BS. Why would he leave bomb making plans in a car after he had already been stopped? Why wouldn't authorities have just taken him into custody on the spot, instead of letting him go across the bridge and possibly disappear? Why, if he is so dangerous, is he still walking around and didn't even get held on some BS charge for a few hours to try and get him to talk?

In the end, nobody got arrested, no weapons or explosives were seized, and the investigation is now public knowledge thus driving anyone involved underground. Brilliant.

Or, the whole thing is some piece of crap investigation and now everyone is just trying to cover their own asses and make it seem like they didn't just work the city into a frenzy for nothing.

ides, in 1998, the police paid an informant to audiotape a guy ranting and raving about jihad.
there were no "bombs ready to go"

its been well documented that Shahawar Matin Siraj
was just a mope and they feds leveraged immigration charges and deportation against his entire family...

on the other hand, in 1997 the police shot Gazi Ibrahim Abu Mezer & his buddy Khalil who actually did have 1 pipe bomb.

Not Denver, Aurora Colo. And it's "Saudi Aurora" to the locals.

"Mr. Zazi said he thought the police might be profiling him or suspected him because he has a beard and had rented the car."

I'm sure it had nothing to do with the wire transfers from Dick Cheney.

Zazi complains about rent in New York being too high, but he rents a car to drive from Denver to NY? That's got to be more expensive than a plane ticket. He only hops on a plane when he knows he's being watched.

Halloween is around the corner.

During the parade, The NYPD does some idiotic things to the subway exits along 6th Ave & near the village. They close off all but 1 subway stairwell at stations like Spring St and others, making it very dangerous for passengers if a fire or attack happened.

The street barricades along 6th Ave and between certain streets are also ultimately a bad idea if a terrorist attack were to happen, since everybody would be locked into a particular area with little chance of escape.

I'll side with Ray Kelly over the Feds any day of the week when it comes to protecting New Yorkers.
