- Toronto 10 Yankees 4: The Yankees must see something in Sergio Mitre because they keep giving him the ball even though he doesn’t pitch very well at all. Mitre’s latest clunker was seven earned runs over five innings. Despite the bad start, the Yankees had their chances. They pounded out 11 hits against Roy Halladay, but they could not string enough of them together. Things got testy in the eighth when the benches cleared after Jorge Posada brushed the Toronto pitcher as he was running past him. Several punches were thrown and the Yankees will probably have some players suspended as a result. Boston won, so the lead in the AL East is now 6.5 games.
- Atlanta 6 Mets 0: Tommy Hanson is making a strong case to be the Rookie of the Year in the NL. On Tuesday, Hanson won his 10th game of the year, holding the Mets scoreless over seven innings while striking out 8. Pat Misch was not as good, allowing four runs in five innings of work which earned him the loss.

What the Yankees see in Mitre is that he's the fifth starter, is costing them only a bit only a million for the year and is essentially getting the expected #5 role done. He's 3 and 2 on the year, and the team is 6 and 3 in games he's started. Not many guys in the 5 spot are doing better.
Relax, he won't be on the postseason roster.
Yeah Shelly Duncan will probably be suspended after landing an elbow to the pitchers dome...good for Shelly...but fuck John McDonald for the sucker punch on Girardi...
the fight was tv magic. nothing like seeing millionaire goons get into a scrum. duncan really gave carlson a nice bruise too.
Another stinkeroo loss for Los Mets... I am relieved that Minaya and Manuel will be back next year–they have earned it.
@jaycjay:
Who, exactly, will the Yankees carry on their post-season roster as starting pitchers? They've got to have at least four guys who can start. CC, AJ, Petite....uh, Joba? Houston, we've got a problem. CC can, I think, be relied upon, Andy's got a sore shoulder, AJ has something like a 6.15 ERA in his last six starts. Joba? Well, I don't share other's enthusiasm.
