Mormons Clean Up Hipster Trash

0909trash.jpg Over the weekend the Mormons were out in full force, cleaning up your sinful refuse at McCarren Park. The Brooklyn Paper got up early to steal some souls with their camera, bragging that they "managed to capture it on film!" They report back saying that 100 youthful members of the Church of Latter Day Saints were picking up trash and raking leaves before the rest of us woke up at the crack of noon thirty. The paper talked to some of the late-rising locals; one 22-year-old Jessica Weinschenk said, “I guess it’s not that weird because religious people do stuff like that. And hey, it’s cool if someone wants to clean our park for us." Way to go Weinschenk. Unsurprisingly, only one non-Mormon claimed to have ever cleaned up for a community, and of course it was part of Burning Man (he told them "when you leave you have to spend four hours cleaning up after yourself"). It's not surprising that the Church descended on Williamsburg, which the Parks Department identified as being the park most in need of maintenance within all five boroughs.

Well thanks to the Mormons for cleaning up. The price will be their efforts to convert and enroll you in their cult. I really have nothing against them, but I never realized how much the other Christians hold them in disdain.

You're right, 22 year-old Jessica Weinschenk. It isn't "that weird," because I guess we should all expect religious people to "do stuff like that". Thank you for that mildly ignorant statement.

because only young white hipsters hang out in mccarran? not families having bbqs and games? and then theres tourists, squatters and general trash. lets find another article to throw a slant on a young girls quotation.

yawn

Are they available for apartment cleaning? Anytime after noon thirty works for me.

Well gee, THAT makes up for Prop 8. Thanks.

i see mormons on the subway a lot too.. maybe they can clean them up as well?

Mormons think you are subhuman. They come to "babylon" to do "missionary" work. They can all go f#uck themselves as far as I'm concerned. I don't need them to "clean up" any part of NYC.

Ha! Gotta love the internets! When I read this, I said to myself, "guaranteed, of the eight comments, there will be at least some negativity." Well, I guess I owe myself a cookie!

How dare those fuckers clean up the trash left by the pigs amongst us who are too inconsiderate to clean up after their own dirty asses!

I don't believe what they do, so I'm better than them, and they should all suffer miserable deaths.

Sure, if I really wanted to show those fuckers, I'd get up and clean the park myself. But nah, it's much more effective to proclaim my superiority through the keyboard.

I think you found the wrong kind of negativity.

Usually they get the wives to clean up.

Um, none of the Mormons I knew, growing up in Utah, openly believed that cameras stole souls. Maybe you're thinking of the Amish?

I know blog comments are rarely bastions of grown-up dialogue, so I'll probably regret this, but forgive me for getting a little serious:

Not all Mormons supported Prop 8 ( http://stewf.blogs.com/stewflog/2008/10/a-christlike-ca.html ), practice aggressive proselytizing, or have multiple wives. Those who make this assumption are guilty of the same sterotyping that Mormons often make about non-Mormons.

The kids mentioned in the story just did something good for the city. Seems like this is the time to react positively. Save your voices for when the church funds another boneheaded campaign.

The Church of Latter-Day Saints contributed roughly 45% of the funding for the Yes on 8 campaign. All active Mormons "tithe" a portion of their salary to the church. Whether or not they actively contributed, their contributions supported the active running of a church that promotes bigotry and intolerance.

I'll use my blog comments however I want. It really should not be forgotten that this church is fucking evil, no matter what good PR events they organize.

i like my mormons. they're nice & the girls are hot. & yeah, i cleaned up after myself & others at burning man: "leave no trace" bitches!!

Are hipsters the only ones making a mess in Wmsburg? Because there are other people in that neighborhood who are very very messy.

Hipsters suck. They aren't hip at all.they're mostly trust fund kids with dirty hair that play copycat to the seeds planted by the true innovators of culture and style that are usually the inderdogs of society and economy. ...and then there's all the bbad hair and moustaches...the shoe laces tied around their heads, the wired top-sider shoe fad, and all the crank and adderol... Hipsters... Sucksters... Clean up after yourselves.

Nice to see we're still stuck on the "hating the hipsters" angle huh? Coming from the biggest hipster in the world, ha...

Man 5: Well, who was right? Who gets into heaven?
Hell Director: I'm afraid it was the Mormons. Yes, the Mormons were the correct answer.
Crowd: [disappointed] Awww.
