Red Hook Green Thumbs Protest Concrete Plant

091409concrete.jpg Red Hook residents held a demonstration Saturday to protest a concrete factory poised to open between a park and the Red Hook Community Farm, one of the city's largest urban farms. The protesters are worried air near the plant will be polluted, and the organic produce will be coated with concrete dust. But the site, located by the Beard Street Ikea, is zoned for heavy industry, and the owner of the company assures the Daily News his plant will have "a lower carbon footprint than most of the concrete being made today." That doesn't placate pint-sized protester Matilda Armstrong, 11, who volunteers at the farm. She tells Brooklyn Paper, "Putting a cement plant right next to a park — how stupid can they be? They should put it in the desert so it doesn’t affect anyone." An aide to state Sen. Velmanette Montgomery is less cute: "I don’t think they appreciate the density of this area and how litigious New Yorkers can be. If you’re opening a cement plant in an area with a 40-percent asthma rate, you’d better open your pocket book, because you’re going to be spending a lot of time in court."

If you don't like what goes on in an industrial neighborhood, take your selfish and whiny attitude to one that isn't zoned for industrial activity. Concrete needs to be delivered in 90 minutes, so it needs to be close to where it will be used, and believe it or not, there are real live blue collar people in the city who need jobs.

Tell that to Little Matilda Armstrong, who thinks putting it in the desert is a GREAT Idea, even though we don't live anywhere near one. She is the expert.

Right... cause Red hook is only comprised of RICH people that can pick up and move on a moments notice... oh right - and screw inner city kids - why should they have an actual park to play in - or learn something by working on a sustainable farm!

This is a real example of how city zoning, Environmental Impact assessments, and ULURP have all broken down. Let the lawsuits begin.

Concrete has been an essential part of dark and dodgy Red Hook history, naturally, so it seems fitting they should manufacture it here. I hope the plan doesn't go through, but if it does, I hope the factory does it's best to work harmoniously with the garden.

Other things people don't/didn't want in Red Hook: IKEA. Not having IKEA. Joe Sitt's Strip Mall. Waste Transfer Station. Pheonix Beverage Distribution Center. Working docks. Cruise Ship Terminal. Fairway. Condo Conversions on Implay Street. The Real World Cast and Crew. City Re-development of Atlantic Basin and Columbia Street. City In-action on Atlantic Basin and Columbia Street. Rehabilitation of the Beard Street Warehouses. Repaving of Columbia Street. Stop lights on Van Brunt. Lack of Stop lights on Van Brunt. Regulation of food vendors at ball fields. Wall Mart. Bike lanes. Lack of bike lanes. Alternate side parking. Lack of alternate side parking. Dogs in Coffee Park. Rules against dogs in Coffee Park. Shut up, Red Hook.

I think someone ought to tell her that the desert has a pretty vibrant ecosystem too.

asthma is the new peanut allergy, or the other way around.

And with John Gotti Jr. on trial, that concrete is free of..."impurities".
