Patrick Swayze Dies At 57

2009_09_patricks.jpg Actor Patrick Swayze, who had been battling pancreatic cancer, died today in Los Angeles; he was 57. His family issued a statement, "Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months." Variety writes, "Trained as a dancer, the half-Apache actor started out in teen heartthrob roles and segued into romantic leads, while also appearing onstage and weathering injuries and accidents. Swayze was raised in Houston, Texas, and his mother was a choreographer and ballet school owner. He trained with the Harkness Ballet and Joffrey Ballet Schools in New York, starting his career dancing for Disney on Parade." Swayze appeared in a number of films, such as The Outsiders and Red Dawn, but his breakout role was in Dirty Dancing, and stole hearts when he co-starred with Demi Moore in the blockbuster paranormal romance Ghost. Earlier this year, Swayze admitted he was afraid of his illness to Barbara Walters and said, "I'd say five years is pretty wishful thinking. Two years seems likely if you're going to believe statistics. I want to last until they find a cure, which means I'd better get a fire under it." After the jump, the Saturday Night Live skit featuring Swayze with Hans & Franz.

how sad. I always had a little crush on the guy. a generous soul and a great smile, he had.

I'll always remember him as the heartthrob of my youth. Rest in peace dancer.

Tough guy to the end. He lasted a lot longer than most with that type of cancer. Having lost my mother to cancer a few months ago, my heart goes out to his family and friends. It's not easy watching someone go out that way.

Sorry for your loss. It sucks to see someone you love suffer while feeling so helpless. My father died from cancer as well. RIP Patrick Swayze:(

I think he pretty much gave up when those pix of him smoking surfaced (and no it wasn't for a scene) right after it was revealed he had cancer.

How is it giving up if its a disease that no one has ever beat? If i were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer my vices would go into overdrive.

RIP!

Dude, that comment is quite unnecessary.

How sad! My old gynecologist had a poster of him pinned to his ceiling. Something to make us girls smile as we laid back in the chair for our pelvic exam!

You can keep your Dirty Dancing and Ghost. Red Dawn, Youngblood, Uncommon Valor - those were awesome.

Point Break man! hotness for ever!

Ready or not, here comes mama!

Sad. Such a nice guy and great actor. To Wong Foo has got to be my all-time favorite with him though.

Point Break man! hotness for ever!

FUCK!!!! Death Train of 09 strikes again! I love patrick swayze. ROAD HOUSE taught me how to be a man. Listen to "She's Like the Wind", The man was a actor and he wrote and performed that. You know how hard that is? it is hard. RIP homey.

He could really laugh at himself and that made him most beautiful. His 1990 SNL appearance was one of the funniest ever.

His name was Jim Cunningham.

Jim Cunningham was a character he played in the movie Donnie Darko. Patrick Wayne Swayze was his real name.

Way to kill the Fight Club reference while complimenting one of his finest roles, dude.

GD you, frekin cancer.
20 months, just 20 months.
OK, I hate to bring this up but if those 8 years were there for stem cell research perhaps just perhaps we'd get some positive research news on pancreatic cancer.

he seemed such a nice, down to earth man. And he was married for more than thirty years, instead of chasing young Hollywood bimbos.
I think he's one of those rare celebrities that really everyone has only warm feelings for.

Word. And I've never even seen Dirty Dancing.

Not many people believed that ballroom dancers could kick ass. But showing up to work when dying of pancreatic cancer (while Jeremy Piven dropped out of a show because of 'too much mercury-tainted tuna') was probably the most kick ass thing you could do. Hat's off to a great, professional actor.

As hard as I used to practice that swagger I couldn't come close. No one could. Rest in Peace.

Something is sure unlucky about the year of 2009. Too many big names are dying.

92Y Tribeca recently presented a Swayze Days of Summer film series, with some of his more popular/acclaimed work (Dirty Dancing, The Outsiders) and the pulpy parts (Road House, Steel Dawn). It was a great celebration of his work and his love of acting, no matter the project. As we've seen from Donnie Darko, he was always able to laugh at himself a little bit.

He seemed incredibly classy (stayed committed to his wife through all his decades of heartthrobdom!), and if you've seen the instructional video Swayze Dancing, you know he loved his mom more than anything. Sweet guy.

He was actually older than I thought - at his peak in the early 90's, he was pushing 40 - I would have thought he was 10 years younger. I always remember him in the SNL skit with Chris Farley where they're Chippendales. He was a great straight man to Farley. RIP.

He was actually older than I thought

Check out this alternate (and more realistic) ending to "Dirty Dancing" courtesy of Family Guy.

Watch Roadhouse with the commentary ON. They do a whole bit using the Chuck Norris jokes, but using Dalton's name instead. Pure fun. RIP SwayzeDog.
