NY Public Library Expands Hours At 10 Branches

2009_09_nypl.jpg Bookworms, rejoice! The New York Public Library has announced expanded hours at 10 locations, with some opening as early as 8 a.m. and closing as late at 11 p.m.! Here's a list of the locations, which also include five locations that had expanded hours from a pilot program; NYPL President Paul LeClerc said, “This is a moment to celebrate. In the current economic climate we have seen that access to libraries is essential. People with different circumstances and needs require their libraries at different times. I am enormously gratified that whether seeking a job, writing the next great novel, completing a school project, researching a new business or checking out the latest best seller, all our users will have time for in-depth pursuit of what they seek from us. I am very grateful to Mayor Bloomberg, Speaker Quinn, and the City Council for preserving funding for library hours, and our staff deserves credit for their willingness to experiment with new ideas and approaches to serving our users." Today the Mid-Manhattan location (Fifth Avenue and 40th Street) is having a party at its one-day only "Cover to Cover Cafe" (free coffee and Tim Hortons Timbits) until 11 p.m.

This was a great surprise this morning on my way to work. Usually when I pass Mid Manhattan, only the book drop is open, but this morning, they were giving away free coffee & TimBits, too. And, I checked out a book that I normally wouldn't have been able to do until my lunch hour. It's a shame that they can't have a Timmy's open in the old giftshop all the time, though. 11:00 p.m.? I hope they've hired some more librarians to fill those new hours?

Compare this to Philadelphia's libraries closing down 10/2 unless their state legislature passes a budget... http://libwww.freelibrary.org/closing/

Public libraries everywhere are an essential service to their communities & should be a priority for politicians when it comes to "bailouts." Not greedy automakers & investment banking firms. What's happening in Philadelphia and what almost happened in NYC is a travesty.

this is good, but as an NYPL librarian I feel for those who have to work til 11pm or start at 8am.

I love the old-school-helpful employees at my local branch. It's the best place to get writing done.

I might actually use my library now that it is open until 8 PM on Tuesday. Before, my only option was Sunday, the library hours were shorter than my working hours. You can cut service back to the point where you might as well not have service at all.
