Last Night's Action: A Good Start
- Jets 24 Houston 7: Mark Sanchez had a great NFL debut and Rex Ryan won his first game as Jets coach. Sanchez completed 18-of-31 passes with 1 TD and 1 interception, as he became the first rookie QB to start a game for the Jets in 32 years. As impressive as Sanchez was, the Jets defense deserves a lot of credit. They dominated the Texans’ offense, allowing only 11 first downs and 183 yards on offense.
- Giants 23 Washington 17: The Giants took an early 17-0 lead and then held on for the win. Credit the defense, which didn’t allow any points until the second half for a stellar effort.
- Yankees 13 Baltimore 3: Hideki Matsui broke open a 3-3 game with a two-run single and added a home run as the Yankees scored eight times in the eighth to salvage the series finale.
- Phillies take two from the Mets: The Phillies won the first game 5-4, surviving a late rally against their beleaguered bullpen. In the nightcap, Pedro Martinez dominated his old club, throwing eight shutout innings and Ryan Madson finished it off for a 1-0 win and a Philadelphia sweep. The losses officially eliminated the Mets from the NL East race.
- And she's back: The unseeded former No. 1 Kim Clijsters won the women's U.S. Open, 7-5, 6-3, over 9th-ranked Caroline Wozniacki. Clijsters had taken two years off to have a child—18-month-old Jada was in the stands to watch her mother's dominating win.
