Today the Mayor and New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Farley announced a three-year health policy called Take Care New York 2012, targeting 10 leading causes of preventable sickness and death, including lung cancer, heart disease and HIV. And in a preliminary interview with the Times, Farley emphasized that sedentary New Yorkers in the boroughs need to start pulling their weight, because they're currently fatter and less active than their sleek Manhattan neighbors: "In Manhattan, most people are going to be walking. Throughout the other boroughs, they are going to be driving." Farley lives in Brooklyn and exercises regularly, and since replacing Dr. Thomas Frieden as commissioner, he's been busy warning New Yorkers about the fatty evils of soda, while also trying to make the city more exercise-friendly. He says his agenda "includes what organizations can do, what we can do as a society" and is "less focused on the health care system." So the plan announced today identifies 10 steps New Yorkers should take, like "Have a Healthy Baby," "Know Your HIV Status," and "Live Free of Dependence on Alcohol and Drugs." ("Drink Diet Soda" isn't one of them.)

wow... thats a very serious belly.
Looks like an alien is going to pop out any second!
or septuplets
he loves it when you call him "big poppa"
Isn't that Octomom before she shot babies out of her vagina like ping pong balls?
I always question these government initiatives to encourage people to exercise - do PSA's like this work? My thought is if your a blob like that buddha-belly guy in the photo, the city is not going to convince to you take a lap around the park.
I'll bet those gory anti-smoking TV ads worked.
Which park for laps? There's very few city parks with good running tracks. If government wants healthier New Yorkers, they need to continue to provide more and well-maintained green space that encourages people to exercise. And as the days grow shorter, the few available tracks, like the one in East River Park, need to be well lit at night for after-work usage. That is currently not the case with the track in the East River Park.

get our cocaine supplies up to Manhattan levels and we'll trim it down right fast out here.
But seriously, if you want us to spend more time walking, how about improving the cleanliness, safety and accessibility of outer-borough public spaces?
There are many opportunities to walk in the outer boros, like to the nearest subway stop. Many people out here (Queens) just have a stupid suburban mindset.
My idiot husband, for instance, would rather drive than walk to the CVS, on our corner. He comes from Calif. where only people who are really poor or seriously deranged walk anywhere.
"In Manhattan, most people are going to be walking. Throughout the other boroughs, they are going to be driving."
That's because Manhattanites spend all their income on rent and can't afford cars.
Manhattan is also considered the center of the Universe to the Mayor. The outer boroughs? Not so much.
Maybe if they made fresh produce and better quality foods available to the people of the outer boroughs (especially low income neighborhoods)obesity wouldn't be such an issue. Maybe also if they weren't commuting an hour to work they could spend an hour at the gym instead.
I drive into Manhattan to go walking, so he can kiss my fat B&T butt.
Farley should focus on trimming the fat in our government instead of browbeating the constituents over how much fucking soda they drink... Fuck him
No Fatties
What is up with this fake produce shortage? There is produce! You may have to walk a block or two. Would that be a bad thing? Korean fruit and veggie stores, ever hear of them? Like, um, everywhere! I'm so tired of that same old lame excuse for eating junk.
in wealthier neighborhoods they have those types of grocers . i suggest you take a walk to brownsville or east ny and tell me where you find the nearest produce store. and if you do find one, tell me what the price is on produce because that is also the issue. that is why they have started an incentive to get vegetables pushcarts to these neighborhoods.
Let's face it when people get older they get fatter and people like to eat. I just happen to come from a family line of thin people, the way I eat I should be 400 pounds instead of 180. Even people who work out like fiends still love to eat. They are dying to eat certain foods but neglect themselves. This is a stupid unrealistic story and my response to it is stupid.
I passed a church that had a great slogan for motivating their paritioners, maybe the same could work here?...
"Exercise Daily...... Run from Satan"
Well at least it made us laugh.
