As a bit of an antidote to the upsetting animal cruelty news, we recommend you read this NY Times real estate section story about the Upper West Side apartment of cat rescuer Tammy Cross. Cross works with Kitten Little Rescue—maybe you've seen their set-up of cats available for adoption and fostering on the corner of West 72nd and Columbus Avenue—and in her one-bedroom rent-stabilized apartment, "some 6 to 18 baby kittens — and once as many as 22 — are bottle fed and nursed back to health." Awwww.
While cats and cat toys are evident, the NY Times says, "The space is scrupulously clean. The three litter boxes are emptied so religiously that you would never know just by sniffing that this is what pet supply manufacturers describe as a multiple-cat household." Cross, who also discusses the cats in this audio slide show, told us this morning that she hopes this article will lead to some adoptions.
Kitten Little Rescue is one of many animal rescue organizations in the city that are made up of dedicated volunteers who take in animals that would otherwise be at risk—some others we know are Empty Cages Collective, Bideawee, and Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition—hats off to all of them! And a disclosure: Our cats Madison (silver grey tabby) and Curtis (black Siamese mix) were adopted from Kitten Little Rescue—here they are in the KLR cages in August 2007, and here they are just a few weeks ago.

Awesome. Thanks for posting this.
kitty kindness FTW!
I love your photo of Curtis and Madison!!
Kitten Little Rescue does some good work. They deserve a lot of credit and support.

Batman is so adorable!!
God bless Tammy Cross.
Kitten Little Rescue and all the other rescue groups do a really terrific job—my family is so thankful for Madison and Curtis each day. Tammy rescued a days-old Madison from Animal Care & Control and bottle-raised her. Curtis was a kitten in a feral cat colony in Spanish Harlem when he was brought to Tammy; someone had been feeding the cats there but worried because he seemed to be less and less afraid of humans (worrisome development since some unscrupulous types have no problem taking stray kittens over to their fighting dogs as "bait").
Curtis was still a kitten when we adopted him, but Madison was already 11 months old. People, if you're thinking of adopting, adult cats also rule!
Love the cuddling kitties pic!
You're right, adult cats are awesome pets to adopt. My cat was 2 or 3 years old when we got her from BARC in Williamsburg, and she is so much fun.
Several years ago, when I lived on the UWS, I met Tammy and her kitten rescue. At the time, I felt that I wasn't able to make a full commitment and adopt... but after speaking with Tammy, we decided that we could arrange something more short term and I became a foster to 5 kittens.
So please keep in mind, even if you can't adopt you might still be able to help by providing care in a loving temporary home until the kittens can find a family.
I am fostering again now through another organization and have two 5-week old kittens. One is an energetic and curious girl with onyx black coat. She loves fake mice and paper bags. The other is a super cuddly brown tabby boy who is just a purring machine! Both will be ready for adoption in 3 weeks. Please let me know if you might be able to give them a real home!
Thanks so much for posting this!! I love Tammy, and the work she does is just incredible. We got one of our cats from her several years ago. He was about 1 year old when we adopted him, and he is the sweetest cat in the world!
finally, someone who isn't putting cats in microwaves or throwing them against walls.
i can't even say i got my cat through a shelter. he was found on the streets at three months old, ribs sticking through his sides and starving. seven years later, even with a rare case of anemia, and he's still going strong.
thank you for this great start to monday.
this is the most awsome story i've seen on this site in a long time! our 2 shelter cats are the loves of our lives and turned 8 last week!
