New Gang of Muggers Target Greenwich Village

2009_09_wspnight.jpg Police are looking for a teenage trio responsible for a new mugging spree in the West Village and SoHo. The gang of two males and a female in their late teens went on a tear early one morning a couple weeks back, hitting up four victims in less than five hours. The Post reports the first robbery took place as the bar crowd spilled out onto the streets of Greenwich Village just after four in the morning on August 28th. The initial mugging occurred at Washington Place and Washington Square West and the three subsequent incidents were all within a short distance from there. The trio is then suspected of committing a fifth robbery on August 31st on West 9th Street. The gang is said to have flashed a knife at their targets, but none of the victims were injured. The two male suspects were described as 5-foot-9 and 145 pounds and the girl thief as 5-foot-4 and 115 pounds, police said. Last year the West Village was on alert after a spate of violent muggings went down in a small area.

tsk, tsk. After 17 comments, nobody has pointed out the subject-verb disagreement in the headline?

    Good catch.

For however PC the motivation in not sharing the victim's race is, nobody likes PC BS, even liberal sissies such as myself. Hating PC is not some sort of tough conservative right anymore than the fact that 99% of these reports do come with a racial description. I find the detail to be very important, even if it only narrows the suspect pool down to 1 million from 2 million; it is fishy that we aren't told that tidbit in this story, but it's either b/c of poor reporting or because it's implied, which to me should make the "I hate PC" crowd more proud that even the sissies are being blunt in this situation, rather than scared of the facts.

More importantly to me is that this seems like a pack of 3 punk ass teens. I'd probably cooperate if confronted by them, but it's only a matter of time until they prey on the wrong target and get the piss beat out of them.

Let's hope that happens at least, otherwise the pigs will open fire on them and we'll have a PC PR nightmare on our hands. I really don't need another fresh dose of Al Sharpton vs. everyone but him, and I'd love to see these little shits get what's coming to them (only to be told on NY1 by their aunts who raised them that they're good students).

I don't know what you are talking about. There are a whole lot of media stories designating skin color to the perps, especially blacks. Maybe it's just lazy reporting or maybe you just need confirmation bias. I'd agree with you that there are a lot more blacks committing stupid violent crimes but I'd disagree with you that there is a conspiracy to cover up those crimes as the term "suspect is described black" is very prevalent in the media. obviously you've never been to the midwest or watched an episode of COPS as the perps are all dumbass white people on crystal meth.

  • ides_of_march

Sorry folks, we're not allowed to notice the skin color if they happen to be black. Although that information narrows down the search a great deal, racial sensitivity is far more important than protecting the public. Just more liberal idiocy we have to get used to.

  • casey shain

lol. do you REALLY think adding 'black' or 'hispanic' to the description narrows down the search? from what 8 million to 4 million? it's absolutely no help whatsoever. PATTERNS of crimes is a much better identifier, and every single appropriate and necessary criteria FOR THE PUBLIC was included here. 'beware of three slight teens, 2 male 1 female of a certain height and weight' is a much better way to describe assailants than 3 black people or 3 hispanics. get over your fucking racism, too. contrary to your insane belief system, not every perp is of color.

  • Guav

If you're going to suggest that narrowing it down from 8 million to 4 million isn't helpful because it's still 4 million, then why bother describing their height and age either?

Look, either you think describing the assailants is helpful, or you don't. If you are going to describe the assailants, then give ALL the possible information you have—not just some of it. Every little bit helps—height, age, race, clothing, accents, tattoos .... that's the point of providing descriptions.

Or just don't bother at all. After all, why bother if there are millions of possible assailants.

  • thefacts

"do you REALLY think adding 'black' or 'hispanic' to the description narrows down the search?"

    Yes, by at least half.

Skin tone - like sex, height, weight - is part of a readily visible identification. Unless you are PC (Gee, I even agree with Ides on this one. LOL)

  • Splicer

If no color is mentioned then assume they are black. If they were white, it would be in the story.

  • d_simon

    what color was their skin?

  • casey shain

don't you think this is a "story" because the village is a destination point? it's a place visitors/tourists/bridge & tunnel people make a point of seeing and hanging out it. it's a place people come to that might not be familiar with the 'streets.' the areas you mentioned in the first posts are not.

  • Willie Nillie

The Village is such a nice area of the city

  • Peter

Something missing from the descriptions? No, guess not.

  • vacazione

that's funny. even the new york post failed to identify the suspects' race. maybe even the victims don't know. or maybe "teen" in nyc is like "urban" in the rest of the country.

  • tolu1973

how retardedly PC to we have to be to describe heighth & weight but not describe their most identifiable features??

  • brandonz

I wonder if this would be a "story" if it were taking place in Jamaica, Ozone Park, East Flatbush, or somewhere else... just saying.

  • TKaisen

In the same way it isn't a story when the sun comes up in the morning.

  • style crusader

it's a story because the village and its surrounding areas don't have muggers on a regular basis. those 'other' areas have this kinda crap happening all the time. so, yes, it is a story. don't make it sound like something it isn't.

  • Kojak

True, but then the story would've had a different ending:

"Would-be robbers in attempted mugging stabbed, shot, then peed on."

Kids in the Village are soft targets who're more likely to have money & are from out of town. Easy pickings for novice punks.

  • non_sequitur

    Indeed.
