Bed-Stuy Shooting Victim's Mother Wants Justice

2009_09_bsshe.jpg After the early evening drive-by shooting that killed two and injured another on Thursday night, a victim's mother spoke out. Antoine Stokes, 20, and 15-year-old Steven Hill were fatally shot by gunmen in a SUV as they sat on their Bedford-Stuyvesant stoop, while Derrick Henry, 14 or 16, was wounded. Stokes' mother Ernestine said her son was in the wrong place at the wrong time, adding he even worried about the violence in the neighborhood, "I just want you to catch his killer and get these crimes off the street because it's too bad that you have to lose your child over stupidness that he didn't do." Yesterday, the Daily News said that locals were weary of the drug-related violence, with a school principal saying, "There's a street turf war around here. We've been putting up with this for too long."

Mayor Bloomberg is 100% right in his effort to eliminate guns in the city. The penalty for possessing an unlicensed firearm should be mandatory jail time. My condolences to Ernestine Stokes and the others involved in this awful business.

you guys ever see the movie zardoz? it has a line that is very telling - "The gun is good. The penis is evil. The penis shoots seeds, and makes new life to poison the Earth with a plague of men, as once it was, but the gun shoots death, and purifies the Earth of the filth of brutals. Go forth . . . and kill!" and it's TRUE! all this killing stems from fucking, having babies that are neglected and the babies grow into little criminals who will kill you and your children. If you want to stop crime, stop fucking.

It's the first and hopefully the last time I will see Sean Connery in a diaper.

I can tell you one thing, Al Sharpton, again, is no where to be found. Communities like this one are being eaten alive by a virus and he sits in his cushy mansions paid for by his supporters, while shit like this reigns down.

Good looking out for humanity, Al...

I don't disagree with you, but can I please just say what you're thinking:

The shooters weren't white or the NYPD, so obviously Al is not unhappy. He also is still very distraught over Michael Jackson's death as he takes credit for all things MJ. Al cannot be bothered about these pesky situations.

In all seriousness, what I want to know is what type of kid Stokes was. Was he the "good student" type who was actually a POS, or was he in the wrong place at the wrong time and we should be upset over the loss of a good person? I'll lean towards the latter out of respect to his mother and the fact that she seems to care very much about this tragedy, but I'd love to know more definite circumstances surrounding this.

Exactly: Al is no where to be found because it is black on black violence. Give me a break, he keeps his "race" down & letting them kill each other instead of fighting for gun control & getting them out of the gettos while he stays rich...

Derrick Henry is either 14 OR 16 years old, but he's definitely NOT 15 years old. Everyone got that?

They still don't know how old he is ? Was he born in Somalia ?

Antoine was a former student of mine, and one whom I have thought of many times since having left the school where I taught him. Senseless violence and a public education system that falls short all too often. Rest in peace, young man. You will not be forgotten.

I'm certain several people know who shot him, but because of the community's idiotic "stop snitchin'" mantra no one will tell anything....

I took a few punches to the throat and kicks to the ribs a few days before that shooting - a block west of there in "Historic Stuyvesant Heights".

Yeah, Bed Stuy is all about the senseless random violence.

The bad ol days are comin' back.

It doesn't matter if you're black, white or yellow. There's a cop, thug or teenager with anger management issues to work out on any convenient target.

Watch out. They like to travel in packs.
