White On Rice is a funny and endearing film about Jimmy (played by Hiroshi Wantanabe), a 40-year-old Japanese immigrant whose life is in utter comedic shambles after his wife leaves him and he is forced to move in with his sister, her unsympathetic husband, and their brainy son. Directed by Dave Boyle, after his acclaimed indie debut Big Dreams Little Tokyo, the story is not only about the unfortunate circumstances that plunder his new life in America— such as his frequent language barrier mix-ups or the chasing of an unrequited crush—but also about his general awkwardness and naivete in these situations (think Napoleon Dynamite). There's the "Aw, poor guy," factor to it, but Variety's Dennis Harvey saw the comedian-at-work in White on Rice, describing it as having "an amusingly off-kilter humor." — Michelle Geslani

Just a note to Jen and the editors: I really like what you've done with these Friday movie postings. The click-through photo/caption format is awesome.
But this is a Gothamist post, so I guess I have to say something nasty as well. So, err, I can't stand people who take their pugs on the subway. They just really get my goat. Grrr.
White on Rice doesn't appear to be playing anywhere near NYC though. At least not according to Google.
