Kate Beckinsale stars in the thriller Whiteout, playing a U.S. Marshal investigating Antarctica's very first homicide victim. But wouldn't you know it, the killer doesn't stop at one! Amidst the backdrop of a very frigid, glacial and unwelcoming crime scene, the murders multiply and only seem to boggle law enforcement. While the bone-chilling mystery behind the piling bodies would be enough to steer away any detective, Beckinsale has yet another obstacle to overcome: nature. The former Underworld star is literally in a race against time as a deadly winter is about to ravage the area and put both the case and her life in danger.
"With Beckinsale simultaneously battling man and nature, there’s some serious potential for a moody psychological thriller in the vein of the original Insomnia, or at least a scary environment-aided horror film like The Thing," said the Onion's Tasha Robinson. The film was adapted from Greg Rucka's graphic novel of the same name, and directed by Dominic Sena who has in the past put forth visually stimulating works like Swordfish and Gone in Sixty Seconds. —Michelle GeslaniClick on the film stills above for more on this week's new releases and repertory screenings, which also include White On Rice, Crude, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, Gogol Bordello Non-Stop, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, No Impact Man, The Painter Sam Francis, Sorority Row, The Other Man, Walt & El Grupo, Give Me Your Hand,Whiteout, and The Godfather.

Just a note to Jen and the editors: I really like what you've done with these Friday movie postings. The click-through photo/caption format is awesome.
But this is a Gothamist post, so I guess I have to say something nasty as well. So, err, I can't stand people who take their pugs on the subway. They just really get my goat. Grrr.
White on Rice doesn't appear to be playing anywhere near NYC though. At least not according to Google.
