The Daily News has an exclusive op-ed from President Barack Obama on remembering the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The full op-ed is here, but here's an excerpt:
Eight years ago, on an ordinary Tuesday morning, nearly 3,000 lives were lost in the deadliest attack on American soil in our history. It was an event that forever changed the life of this city. And it was a tragedy that will be forever seared in the consciousness of our nation.
Every year on this day, we are all New Yorkers.
We pause to remember the victims, to grieve with the families and friends of those who died, and to honor the heroes of that day and each day since who have sacrificed to save lives and serve their country.
We will never forget the images of planes vanishing into buildings; of billowing smoke rolling down the streets of Manhattan; of photos hung by the families of the missing.
We will never forget the rage and aching sadness we felt.
And we will never forget the feeling that we had lost something else: a sense of safety as we went about our daily lives.
The memory of those images and that vulnerability reminds us of the real and present danger posed by violent extremists who would use terrorism against Americans at home and around the world.
As President, my greatest responsibility is the security of the American people. It is the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning. It's the last thing I think about when I go to sleep at night.
He goes on to discuss what he's trying to do to "reduce the likelihood of an attack" and also emphasize "why we are marking this Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. On this day, and every day, it is incumbent on each of us to uphold those ideals that our enemies were - and are - so eager to destroy. To serve others and give back to our communities. To respect our differences and to value what we share. To remember that even when we disagree, and disagree strongly, that we are all Americans - that we are all striving to leave for our children a safer and more perfect union." Obama will be visiting the Pentagon today; Vice President Joe Biden is at Ground Zero.
The September 11 commemoration events are underway at Zuccotti Park and Ground Zero; you can see streaming coverage at NY1 and NBC New York.

Dear President Obama...you know what else we will never forget?
The name Sivan Kurzberg.
batty indeed.
Obvious troll is obvious.
Who is Sivan Kurzberg
Punctuation fail.
Ahh. And so it begins.
Not to be at all disrespectful on this 8th anniversary day, but as I watch the reading of the names, I'm left to wonder a few things:
The name-readers. Are they screened beforehand? Don't they get to practice the names they are to read in advance? There have been a few readers who proceeded to badly mangle every single name they were given to read. If I were the surviving family, I'd be pretty offended that my family member's name couldn't even be pronounced correctly. Isn't that the VERY least we can do??
And who is on the controls for the photos with each name read? There is a major problem in coordinating the names with the photos, after all these years. Is that really the best they can do?
There are so many names read where they bring up the stock photo of the white rose, rather than a photo of the person being memorialized. Did these people really not have a single photo ever taken of them? This is their final memorial. Am I the only one who thinks that it seems insulting that the family or SOMEBODY doesn't take the trouble of providing a photo for this annual memorial? Or is there some reason for this that I don't know about. To me, it really cheapens their memory, somehow.
You know what I'll never forget? The fact that I couldn't get coffee anywhere near Park Row/Fulton St that morning because every single coffee cart was missing. These guys never missed a day but all knew not to go to work that morning.
heard the same thing about all the jews who worked in the towers calling in sick that day. 9/11 is a lightning rod for conspiracy nutters.
I'm not trying to discredit your comment, but what I wrote was that I, with my own eyes, could not find coffee because they usual coffee carts were not there.
I didn't hear this, it's not a story, I despise of conspiracies.
not a problem at all, my good man. i am just questioning the implications of your alleged experience among others. i just can't believe that coffee cart guys, office jews, etc. have their finger on the pulse of islamic terrorist operations. it is a slippery slope: if they all knew, then which federal agencies knew? and if the agencies knew the president must have known, and on and on.
I'm not exactly sure I have implications. I'm sure someone can drum something up for me though. The Man Bat, you can jump in any time now.
and if the agencies knew the vice president must have known, and on and on.
Fixed your post.
People died in a horrific attack perpetrated by complete idiots. If anything 9/11 is a symbol of why we cannot simply try to ignore the foolish and the ignorant. 8 years on, I can't help but feel like we've given up far too much to this spectre of cataclysm and the fools that have driven themselves mad miscomprehending it. We really do need to put an end to the perversions of our own domestic fools.
Stop the bag checks. Get rid of the DHS. Turn the TSA back into the over glorified mall security they are at heart. And let America continue to be the land of the free and the home of the brave. Stop pissing on the graves of 3000 innocent people because you are scared.
There's been a whole industry built on fear - one of the few things this country can still produce. Too late to take all those jobs away now.
And please give us back the 7th inning stretch while you're at it. Ever since 9/11 you have to stand up and sing God Bless America in the middle of every Yankee game. The terrorists killed the 7th inning stretch!
This is not a national day of service and it never will be. Today is about remembering those that were killed. Thats it.
Wholeheartedly agree - we should all take this day to just remember and reflect.
On this day, and every day, it is incumbent on each of us SUPPORT OUR TROOPS AND REDOUBLE OUR EFFORTS TO ERADICATE JIHADISM.
FEAR HATE FEAR HATE FEAR HATE FEAR HATE ad infinitum. The GOP's last product.
crawl back in your bottle and thank god for the U.S. armed forces.
The 9/11 Memorial on Staten Island - just to the west of the baseball park - is tastefully done, and a nice place for reflection.
They had a few on the news this morning- the ones in Bayonne and the Meadowlands look really nice as well.
It is a beautiful memorial in that it is serene and honors those who died.
I'm grateful that we no longer live under the administration that failed us so horribly in 2001.
Yes I to am glad Bill Clinton is long gone from office.
He was honoring the 19 hijackers.
19 muslims murdered nearly 3000 people on american soil in the name of allah 8 years ago today.
That's the truth but you won't hear it spoken so plainly and honestly.
You're stating the obvious you idiot. Got any other gems of insight to offer?
The trust is some of the 3,000 included Muslims.
A formerly radical Muslim cleric recently said if every time an American building is destroyed a Muslim country is invaded, then it's not a very good terrorist plan.
"A formerly radical Muslim cleric recently said if every time an American building is destroyed a Muslim country is invaded, then it's not a very good terrorist plan."
So has he gone public denouncing terrorists and their supporters in his mosque?
(Sounds like he's only suggesting they switch tactics).
Odigo...Google it.
