Moving the McCarren Greenmarket

0909mcgreen.jpg Last time we checked in on the McCarren Greenmarket, it was begrudgingly moving to a concrete-heavy spot on Union Avenue between Bayard and Driggs, but now the NY Post reports that the market got a little upgrade, and will be moving to Driggs and North 12th this October. The move is being made after the Parks Department was concerned about how damaged the grass was becoming at their current location of Bedford Avenue and Lorimer Street. CB1 Parks Committee member Dewey Thompson told the paper, “It is a terrific transition step towards permanently demapping Union between Driggs and North 12th and a perfectly suitable use for the street, especially considering the fact that, for years, the Greenmarket, while offering the community much-needed fresh greens has been crushing some of the highly endangered green grass in the park." Some vendors are concerned with losing money due to less pedestrian traffic, so everyone go buy some apple cider donuts and pumpkins this fall!

If it's damaged grass they're trying to protect they should go after the people who've turned certain areas of the park into bare-dirt vollyball courts...

Lots of neighborhood people come to the farmers market there every week– I always hear lots of Polish, Russian and Spanish being spoken at all the stands. This is not a hipster market, or even a stroller mom market– it's a neighborhood market.

I am sure somehow the hipsters have much to do with the damage to the grass area. They will trample over each other for anything labelled as organic, macrobiotic or "farm fresh" Add in the stroller moms and their broods, and the park won't last too much longer.

Let's not get organic and local or fresh foods mixed up with macrobiotics, which is arguably almost as dumb as the atkins diet.

kudos on not automatically naming kickball as the villain in this story.

  • iamdmg

yeah, Brooklyn Kickball is only to blame for like 40% of the damage to the whole park.

    Maaaaaaybe 50%
